Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Steele.
Hi Christian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I fell in love with boxing as young kid but didn’t actually start boxing until I was in my late teens. Though I was a multi-sport athlete in high school with a partial scholarship for football coming out, something about boxing made me draw nearer to it and I Choose to stick with it instead. I went on to be come a 2-time Golden Glove Champion and won all but 4or 5 of my amateur fights!
I then turned Pro fighting on huge platforms all over the United States. but, after 24 professional fights decided I was done fighting. I was only 27 at the time, which is pretty young for retiring from boxing but in my heart, it was the best thing for me to do. I was at a crossroads trying to figure out what to do next in life since I was giving up something that I had dedicated so much time of my life too. While most people were in college getting degrees that would set them up for their future careers, I was fighting and there weren’t many career paths that could come from that. I tried going to trade school to be an electrician since I figured I’d make a enough money to live off of by doing that. But because of my love of boxing still worked part-time in a gym. I was miserable doing electrical construction. One day my wife gave me a book, “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” that she had heard me mention that I wanted to read. That was the turning point. After reading it, I had a revelation! I didn’t have to live a life of unhappiness and under someone else’s conditions. I didn’t have to let all my years of boxing experience go down the drain! I realized that I could make a career out of doing what I was passionate about and what I loved to do! Soon after, I quit my job doing electrical construction and embarked on my new career as a Personal Trainer specializing in Boxing training! Fast forward six years and a few gyms later, here we are now. I have a training Studio of my own where I’m able to make a living doing what I love and am passionate about, as well as facilitate space for other great trainers to do what they love and are passionate about as well!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t necessarily been a smooth road because I just took a leap of faith and jumped into it headfirst with no definitive plans other than just to not work a job that I hated anymore. So I had no idea what was in store for me. As I began to learn and understand the business side of it, my perspective changed from employee to self-employed because this was truly the reality of my situation. This is where I began to face most of my obstacles and struggles. Before I realized my true value while Working in other facilities, I had to deal with unfair compensation, bad checks being written to me, constant marginalization, even gyms abruptly shutting down, causing me to lose clients by relocating! But at the end of the day, I’m a fighter! So I rolled with those punches and always found a way to come back and keep fighting!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Steele Boxing & Athletics is a Private boxing and Personal Training studio specializing in one on one training and small group training. Aside from Boxing, we also offer kickboxing and strength & Conditioning training as well. There are many things that separate us from others. One of the main things is our “Quality over quantity” approach to business and training. Our structure makes for a more intimate setting where we’re able give our undivided attention to clients during training that allows us to give constant correction and instruction, which helps with proper development. Also, our welcoming environment full of encouragement and empowerment is second to none and ensures you that you are not just a client but a part of our SBA family versus just being another member like most facilities. The cherry on top and one of the things I’m most proud of is that we have one of the most experienced, professional and versatile teams of trainers in the city! Our team of trainers consists solely of professional fighters, certified personal trainers, and elite sports recovery therapist!
