Inspiring Conversations with Dr. Ngonzi Truth Crushshon of Dr. Truth & Associates, LLC and Dr. Truth Coaching, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ngonzi Truth Crushshon.

Hi Dr. Ngonzi Truth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story begins on the South Side of Chicago, where I grew up working alongside my parents in the community. Service wasn’t something we talked about—it was something we lived every day. My father, Rev. D.A. Crushshon, Sr., is a Baptist pastor, and my mother is both a trained social worker and K-12 educator. Together, they led outreach efforts that supported youth and families in under-resourced neighborhoods, everything from baseball and basketball leagues to summer camps, a Christian school, and food and clothing giveaways.

For over 20 years, they served as principals of a Christian school in West Englewood, dedicated to providing quality education and stability for underserved families. Being raised in that environment shaped how I see the world. I didn’t just witness need, I witnessed resilience, faith, and the power of consistent community care.

That foundation followed me to Fisk University, a Historically Black College and University that played a pivotal role in my development. While there, I had the opportunity to train under Dr. Sheila R. Peters, who introduced me to the field of community psychology and expanded my understanding of what was possible. Through my work with foster care youth in high schools and family-centered programs, I began to see how deeply environment, trauma, and access shape outcomes.
I earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Clinical Psychology from Fisk, and later pursued my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University Chicago.

Early in my career, I trained in a community mental health clinic under the guidance of Dr. Carl C. Bell, whose work profoundly influenced my approach. He emphasized that risk factors are not predictive when protective factors are present, a perspective that continues to shape how I view healing, resilience, and human potential.

Today, I am the founder of Dr. Truth & Associates, LLC and Dr. Truth Coaching, LLC, in Atlanta, Georgia where we provide therapy and coaching services for individuals ages 3 to 100, as well as couples and families. My work focuses on childhood trauma, grief, and relational healing, with a core mission of breaking generational cycles.

At the heart of what we do is helping people rewrite their internal narratives. We guide clients through the process of telling their trauma stories until they are able to step into stories of triumph and empowerment. So many people are living according to old stale beliefs shaped by pain, limitation, or survival. Our work is about identifying those belief patterns, challenging them, and replacing them with the TRUTH.

We believe people are made for more. Through both therapy and coaching, we support deep inner transformation, helping individuals align mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. This is not surface-level work. It’s intentional, transformative healing that addresses the mind, body, and soul.

Everything I do today is a continuation of what I learned growing up: that healing happens in community, that people deserve access to support, and that with the right framework, a new paradigm shift and belief systems, transformation is always possible.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road and I believe that’s where the depth of my work was truly forged.
One of the most defining seasons came during the 2008 recession, when my 1st therapist position and agency was eliminated and I lost my home to foreclosure. It was a humbling and disorienting experience, learning how to live on half of my income while navigating uncertainty about the future. That season required a level of faith, resilience, and creativity that reshaped me. There was a great deal of praying, journaling, and quiet perseverance behind the scenes, moments that were not visible, but deeply transformative.

Not long after, I experienced a series of personal losses, including the passing of my close Aunt Jay and a 2nd mom who helped rear me. That period of grief was profound. Grief has a way of interrupting “life as usual”—it slows you down, invites reflection, and often requires you to sit with emotions that cannot be rushed or bypassed.
In that stillness, I was forced to reconnect with what truly mattered—my values, my purpose, and the kind of life I wanted to live moving forward. What could have been a period defined solely by loss became a turning point. It deepened my capacity for empathy, expanded my emotional range, and ultimately transformed how I show up both personally and professionally.

That experience became the catalyst for a new level of intentionality and transparency. I began living more purposefully, with a clear resolve to make my life count and to build a legacy, something that would outlive me. It also led me to author Black Girls Cry and to specialize more deeply in grief work supporting others as they navigate loss, identity shifts, and emotional healing.

Looking back, those challenges were not detours, they were defining chapters. They refined my voice, strengthened my faith, and anchored me in the truth about me, as well as, the perspective that even in life’s most difficult moments, transformation is always possible.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dr. Truth & Associates, LLC is a boutique mental health and transformational practice rooted in one core mission: breaking generational cycles through truth, healing, and intentional living. We provide therapy across the lifespan serving individuals, couples, and families with specialties in childhood trauma, grief, and relational healing.

What sets our work apart is that we go beyond symptom management. We focus on deep narrative and core belief transformation—helping clients identify the internal beliefs and stories shaped by trauma, lack mindset, survival, and limitation, and guiding them toward alignment with truth, wholeness, and personal power. This is where clinical expertise meets lasting transformation.

We blend 3 unique modalities: traditional therapy, transformational coaching and therapeutic coaching.

Our coaching method takes less time 6-12 sessions with greater and more permanent transformation.

We teach new internal operating systems of beliefs and we operate from a new paradigm.

Dr. Truth has 20+ years as a licensed eligible psychologist, 10 years in private practice, and has certification in a proprietary Transformational Coaching program.

Dr. Truth is trained in healing/forgiveness modalities so clients participate in actual healing and forgiveness work.

We focus on targeting and transforming limiting, negative core beliefs that keep clients stuck in a life they do not want.

We identify and transform beliefs from the root (the cause=the beliefs) and not just the effect (the behaviors).

We work with the client through an inner transformation process that manifests outwardly into ideal behaviors and the anticipated lifestyle of the client’s desire-with more ease, more flow, more love and more joy.

We focus on family systems, most therapists and coaches focus on work with individuals.

We deal with the mind, body and soul of the person and not just the mind and body.

We provide evidence-based assessments/interventions and individualized written plans that can be applied
post-treatment for ongoing self-healing.

We provide concierge services including client-centered care, 1 on 1 time with doctor/coach for questions until understanding is acquired, consultations are longer than most doctor’s 15 minutes touchpoint.
We provide in home, in office, and virtual appointments for clients in the U.S. and internationally.
We consult with all providers involved in client care for wraparound services and provide warm-referrals to trusted providers, when needed.
We close service gaps in care, that are often seen in other therapy and coaching practices.

As our brand continues to evolve, we are expanding into two signature offerings: Transformational Coaching and Therapeutic Coaching through Dr. Truth Coaching and Consulting, LLC. These services are specifically designed for
high-capacity women and men—executives, entrepreneurs, education administrators, government/political leaders, military leaders, clergy, and health/mental health professionals—who are ready to elevate both personally and professionally. We have worked with Fortune 500 companies, Historic Girl Scouts of Georgia, Department of Human Services/Department of Children and Family Services in Georgia and in Illinois. We have been approached for employee trainings with Starbucks and Circle K.

Our work with these women and men is deeply integrative. We support them in refining not only their business strategies and systems, but also their self-concept. Because at the highest levels, success is not just about what you do, it’s about who you believe yourself to be.

Through our coaching experiences, clients undergo an internal shift that allows them to embody the truth of who they are. They gain clarity around their God-given purpose, their unique gifts, and the audiences they are called to serve. From that place of alignment, they begin to attract more ease, more joy, more aligned relationships, and greater prosperity.
We also incorporate a spiritual and holistic framework that is both grounded and intentional. Our clients learn how to integrate practices that sustain them—quiet reflection, emotional release, sacred self-caring consciousness, and spiritual discernment. We teach them how to lead their lives and businesses from a place of internal authority, with God as their ultimate strategist—their Spiritual CEO and CFO—guiding their decisions.

What I am most proud of, from a brand perspective, is that we have created a space where high-achieving women and men no longer have to choose between success and healing, or between strategy and spirituality. They are supported in embodying all of who they are. powerful, intuitive, emotionally aware, and purpose-driven.
At its highest level, our work helps clients reframe obstacles as opportunities, expand their capacity to lead, and build lives and businesses that are not only successful but deeply aligned and sustainable.

What I want readers to know is this: transformation is not just possible, it is available now. When you align your beliefs, your healing, and your purpose, you don’t just build a better life, you become the transformed version of your higher spiritual self who is meant to live it.

How do you think about happiness?
Happiness is external. What brings me Joy (internally and externally) is time spent in personal reflection and communicating with God. Visualizing/vision boarding new intentions for myself, our company and better ways to serve/partner within our community. New ways to empower our therapy and coaching clients. When clients “do their healing/forgiveness work” and achieve goals they once thought were impossible-when couples/families reunite and resolve long-standing disputes. Traveling the world. Reading and journaling. Laughing. These bring me joy because they provide deep soul fulfillment. It is who and what I was meant to be/do.
