Inspiring Conversations with Elizabeth Hester of Old Point Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Hester.

Elizabeth, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Old Point Design was founded as a continuation of a family legacy. My grandfather established Old Point Custom Homes, naming the company after the historic 18th-century neighborhood of The Old Point in Beaufort, where he was born and raised. In honor of that legacy, Old Point Design was created to carry forward the same commitment to building meaningful spaces that people are proud to call home.
Our work is rooted in history and thoughtful design. We draw inspiration from the evolution of architectural and interior design styles while tailoring every project to reflect the unique vision of each client. More than creating beautiful spaces, we strive to build lasting relationships and bring our clients’ dreams to life in a way that feels timeless, personal, and enduring.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any business, it hasn’t always been a smooth road. Building on a family legacy comes with both opportunity and responsibility. One of the biggest challenges has been establishing Old Point Design as its own brand while honoring the reputation and values that my grandfather built through Old Point Custom Homes.
We’ve also navigated the normal challenges of growing a business—adapting to changing design trends, managing project timelines and budgets, and balancing creativity with the practical needs of each client. Through every challenge, we’ve learned the importance of flexibility, clear communication, and staying true to our core mission: creating thoughtful, timeless spaces that reflect the people who live in them. Those experiences have made us stronger and continue to shape how we serve our clients today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Old Point Design is a full-service interior design studio dedicated to creating timeless, functional spaces that feel deeply personal to the people who live in them. We believe great design goes beyond aesthetics—it should tell a story, reflect our clients’ lifestyles, and stand the test of time.
What sets us apart is our approach. We draw inspiration from the history and evolution of design, blending classic principles with fresh, thoughtful details to create homes that feel both elevated and authentic. Every project begins with listening. We take the time to understand our clients’ vision, needs, and the way they want to experience their home, then thoughtfully guide them through every step of the design process.
We’re especially proud of the relationships we build with our clients. Many become lifelong friends, and that trust is something we value just as much as the finished spaces we create. Carrying on the legacy of Old Point means more than designing beautiful homes—it’s about creating meaningful places where families can gather, grow, and make memories for generations.
Above all, we want people to know that every project is approached with care, collaboration, and a commitment to timeless design. Our goal is to create homes that feel collected rather than trendy, personal rather than prescribed, and as beautiful years from now as they are the day they’re completed.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t think of myself as someone who takes unnecessary risks, but I do believe that growth requires a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. Every meaningful decision in business carries some level of uncertainty, and I’ve learned that the best opportunities often come from trusting your instincts, doing the work, and having the confidence to move forward even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.
One of the biggest risks has been building Old Point Design while carrying on a family legacy. There is a responsibility that comes with honoring the reputation my grandfather built, while also creating a business with its own identity and vision. Finding that balance has required thoughtful decision-making, perseverance, and a willingness to evolve while staying true to our core values.
In design, there’s also an element of risk in encouraging clients to embrace ideas they may not have initially considered. Some of the most beautiful and memorable spaces come from thoughtfully pushing beyond what’s expected. Those moments require trust, collaboration, and confidence, and they’re often what make a project truly special.
I’ve found that the most rewarding risks are the ones grounded in preparation, purpose, and authenticity. When your decisions are guided by those principles, even the challenges become valuable opportunities to learn and grow.
