Inspiring Conversations with India Younger of Ase’ Aesthetics and Beauty Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to India Younger.

India, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Buffalo, NY specifically the east side. My journey began while I was in undergrad at the University at Buffalo and trying to figure out what I wanted to do essentially for the “rest” of my life but who knows that at 18/19? I was stuck between something in the arts and something in the science field, but I was still clueless! I eventually came across a profession known as “Physician Assistant” now known as a “Physician Associate” and did my research on the profession. I found out that PA’s are licensed clinicians who practice medicine in every specialty and setting. If you aren’t familiar with what a PA does we are able to conduct physical exams, diagnose illness and disease, develop medical treatment plans, prescribe medications, perform procedures, assist in surgery amongst many other things. I then finished my undergraduate degree with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology all while completing the necessary courses to be accepted into a PA master’s program. I was then invited to D’Youville College to interview for their program however, I was denied the first time and I was crushed and briefly doubted myself. After that denial letter, I was more determined than ever to prove them wrong, which I did. I went back to the drawing board and re-applied that following year and was accepted! PA school was no walk in the park, but I got it done. I knew that I wanted to work in plastics or aesthetics medicine while in PA school but it is a difficult field to penetrate, especially as a black woman in medicine, nobody wants to give you a chance to prove yourself. So I started off working as a hospitalist, which I hated but I had to start somewhere. I then ventured into orthopedic urgent care and surgery, but I promised myself that I would be relocating to Atlanta by any means necessary.

During the start of the pandemic, I was laid-off and I took that chance to interview for a position down here in Atlanta, GA that I accepted in Pain Management, though it isn’t what I wanted to do long term, it got me where I needed to be. While down here, I have tried to get PA positions at medical offices that provide aesthetic services but I kept hearing “no”, as I said it is a hard field to get into but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. I also always knew that I wanted to work for myself but I had to get the footing to do so. Now fast forward to almost two years here in Atlanta and I’m starting my own concierge medical spa and services called: Asè Aesthetics Med Spa where we will be providing cosmetic injectables, chemical peels, microneedling, IV Hydration Therapy, and other medical testing and treatment. I am here to provide top-tier quality medical services to clients and to let others know that they can do it too. My end goal is to have a franchise of medical spas or even salon suite spacesand to enjoy the fruits of my labor. Be on the lookout for Asè Aesthetics coming this year, 2022! I also mentor pre-PAs and pre-Med students free of charge because I know that struggle of finding someone to help and no one is there or they are charging money that you don’t have to spare.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been FAR from smooth, it has been many bumps along the road. From receiving my denial letter into PA school, being told “no” for job opportunities. I have been through the wringer and at times, it still feels like I’m there. I have been furloughed from jobs due to the pandemic, coming so close to doing what I love to do just to have it snatched from underneath my feet but I am a “glass half full” type of person and like to look at things on a bigger scale. Maybe it wasn’t meant for me to be doing this UNDER someone else so I can do things MY way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My company is named after me (my middle name Ashè) from Yoruba meaning “the power to create that which you speak” as well as “life force/life energy”. I chose this name because it is powerful within its meaning and I spoke this into existence.

Continuing to perfect my craft and remaining educated on new, proven treatments within the field will remain at the top of the priority list.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Being a medical professional during this pandemic has been hard on many of us. We have seen what COVID-19 does to the body during and after infection. It is hard to see patients dying day in and day out and remaining sane. The pandemic has burned many healthcare workers out and now many of us are seeking other paths. This crisis has taught me that life is short and nothing is guaranteed. Nobody thinks that it can ever happen to them but in reality, it could be any one of us. I vowed to myself to only do things that I enjoy after witnessing the effects of this virus. I don’t want to leave this world not fulfilling my dreams and goals.
