Inspiring Conversations with Kimberly Conney of K Conney Tax Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Conney.

Hi Kimberly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started on the path to success after taking many not so fortunate wrong turns as a teenager and young adult. I learned quite a few lessons from along the way. After moving to the Metro Atlanta area in 2003, things began to change for the better. I found a pretty decent job, I got married, I had two more kids and I thought I was living the American dream. It was my mom who truly got me on this career path though. She told me that she would not be preparing my taxes anymore after the 2006 tax season and she encouraged me to take the Tax Preparation course that is offered by H & R Block. I was able to get approved for the scholarship program and successfully completed the course and worked with that company for three years. I then decided to start my own tax business out of my home office. My mother and I planned to get a storefront office so that we could grow and expand our business together in 2015, but unfortunately, she passed away suddenly and I thought life was over. My very good friend encouraged me to continue the plans that I had for the storefront office and he even helped me to get everything in place. I have been in the same location since that time. The business has grown from a mere five clients to over 500 clients. I truly feel like my mother set me up for success. She encouraged me to start a career path that I would have never imaged possible. I am able to be there for my children and my immediate family when they need me and I’m also able to assist others. My business has grown to preparing more that just taxes. We do accounting, quarterly bookkeeping, copy, fax, scan, notary, and resume assistance. My clients are to me than just a number, they are more like family. We get to know each other in a very special way other than just pull a number and be served type of situation. We give back to St. Jude and other charitable organizations. I am thankful to have used the knowledge and strength passed down to me from my mother, my great-grandmother and all of those that have believed in my growth.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Goodness no. The road has not been smooth. In the beginning, I had to work multiple jobs as well as run the tax business just to be able to pay the bills. As soon as I got comfortable and decided along with my mother to move into a storefront office, she suddenly passed away. I was devasted. I didn’t know if I could proceed without her. My good friend, who also happens to be my oldest daughter’s father, encouraged me to keep going and not give up. He even helped me along the way. I have to say that being my own boss has allowed me to be there for my kids in ways that I never could have imagined if I had been employed with a regular 9-5 job. Covid-19 came along and brought with it a few more challenges. I became ill, had a few surgeries and just when I thought that all was well, 2022 came in. On January 31, 2022 the most devasting thing that could ever happen to me happened. My oldest son went to Virginia for a weekend and never returned. He was murdered senselessly. I felt weak, hopeless, helpless, lost and a variety of other emotions. I am still trying my best to recover. Every day is different for me, but I do make the attempt to keep moving forward and continue growing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about K Conney Tax Services LLC?
K Conney Tax Services LLC is a tax preparation and accounting firm. I specialize in more than taxes and accounting. I specialize in the individual people and the individual small businesses. I have to get to know everyone in a very detailed way. I have to know who and what I’m working with. I like to have conversations to the point where the client is able to open up and give me answers to my questions so that I can better serve them. What sets me apart from other tax companies is the fact that I have a children’s area where the kids can be entertained and kept just as comfortable as their parents. I feel as though that helps the visit go much smoother. I am very proud to state that I cater to the whole family and have literally been working with clients that bring their immediate and extended family members for years. I am able to assist clients who reside in the US part-time and their native country part-time. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing to build and grow relationships within my community and all over the world.

Any big plans?
I am looking forward to teaching my niece and my younger daughter that ins and outs of the business. I would like to have someone else that is able to give the same undivided attention and understanding that am able to give. The biggest change that I see coming along is starting a nonprofit to help the youth and trying my best to eradicate all of this gun violence within the African American community.
