Jennifer Jackson of North Atlanta on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jennifer Jackson. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Definitely energy. I am a huge energy person. No matter what room I walk into or who I come into contact with, I always let the energy guide me on how to conduct myself. Many people find it difficult to believe, but I am quite an introverted person. If the energy is off, then I will stay in my shell or find a reason to leave. If there is great energy, then I feel more comfortable “put on” and until my social battery is drained. Every time I approach a client, I always pray for good energy.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jennifer Jackson, and I am a professional makeup artist, published photographer, and the owner of Jennifer J. Artistry, based in Atlanta, Georgia. I am a natural-born creative who has a passion for beauty, content design, photography, and healthy living. As a native of Cleveland, Ohio, I’ve always dreamed of moving to another city while achieving my dreams of expressing my God-given creativity to its fullest potential.

As a self-taught makeup artist, I have been an avid lover of makeup and professionally practicing in my artistry for over fifteen years. Before my relocation to Atlanta, I was trained as a professional makeup artist, perfecting my craft in bridal and in-studio makeup, including airbrushing, proper application and color correction, and custom blended skin-enhancing with foundation, concealer, and powder. My objective as your makeup artist is to provide a professional, yet quality service of makeup artistry that you deserve. My signature look will have to feel stunning, sophisticated, and glamorous Plus, heads will turn once you enter the room!

I am also a published photographer with a passion for capturing all things beauty. While studying Graphic Design during college and with over fifteen years of makeup artistry experience, my passion for mixing beauty and art as a visual storyteller is inevitable. My photography business under Jennifer J. Artistry loves to shoot beauty and lifestyle portraiture for phenomenal business owners.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My family. I come from a middle-class family where they value the phrase, “work hard and play harder”. Growing up, we’ve always had nice things, taken nice vacations, and known the value of hard work. Those values were instilled in me, especially during my teenage years. At one point, I worked two jobs while I was in high school! One of the traits that I picked up from my grandparents is that when I see something I want, I will work my hardest to get it. I still live by this today! I love nice things, and everything that I have comes from hard work, discipline, and sacrifice.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Young Jenn, you are a different breed. You are an artist and gifted. Take those gifts and flourish! No matter what anyone tells you, do not let that fire burn out. Live in your purpose and God will always have your best interest so continue to trust Him. No matter how crazy it looks from the outside, He always knows what’s best. Continue to work hard, invest your money into meaningful things that will better your future, and most importantly, stay true to yourself. Your dreams are there and ready for you to achieve them.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Work for free to get “exposure”. That is a LIE! The beauty industry is always being “undervalued”, especially with Makeup Artists. We are some of the most important aspects of beauty, and yet, people will try and use us for free work. Know your worth. Our products, equipment, and time costs. Treat is as such.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Absolutely, I am doing what I am born to do AND some of what I was told to do. I have my businesses as a Professional Makeup Artist and Photographer, but I still work a full-time job. In a perfect world, I would do what I am born to do on a full-time basis – that is what I am working towards, but in reality, we are in an economy where it is best to keep a consistent flow of income coming in. When the time is right, God will have me do what I was born to do on a full-time basis.
