Johnathan Pitts shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Johnathan , thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
Personally I think others struggle with identity and individuality…I see a lot of people doing the same thing but not making a real statement that separates them from the competition. I think that personal self expression is difficult because people have chosen what’s popular over what’s personal..choosing not to deal with self. That’s where the good stuff is !
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Johnathan Pitts but I go by Chef John
Born and raised in Washington D.C., my love for food started in the heart of a family kitchen, where soulful dishes met bold flavor and tradition. Early on, i discovered that food wasn’t just sustenance — it was storytelling. That passion led me to pursue culinary arts not just as a career, but as a calling.
I made my way south to Atlanta — a city pulsing with culture, music, and opportunity. There, i began building a name synonymous with elevated comfort food, high-energy kitchen experiences, and unforgettable private dining moments. From strip club kitchens to upscale pop-ups, I’ve tried to redefined what Southern cooking looks and tastes like, always blending innovation with soul.
I’ve been fortunate to head hit concepts like “86’d” (culinary streetwear), “Meals by Chef John” (meal prep with flair), and “Chef John’s Tour Catering” (feeding artists on the move). Whether it’s jerk lamb chops, seafood-stuffed potatoes, or brunch for 200, every dish is layered with experience, culture, and swagger.
Today my goal is to turn kitchens into stages and meals into moments, representing the grind from D.C. to ATL — and far beyond.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was this hopeless kid that only saw the world one way and thought I had it all figured out, when in reality I knew nothing g and had not lived yet
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has many lessons, it builds character and patience but it also shows you exactly who you are as person,, your fortitude strength and unwavering ability to overcome such struggles
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Smart people think that all it takes is to be smart, but it takes many other things
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think I’m misunderstood often, people have an idea of me but they do t really know me..I’m very selective about who I allow in my personal space
