Renee Rubens shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Renee, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Tea is about community, One of my personal favourite blends is H.A.C.I.G.G. It’s an acronym for how I strive to show up and how I want others to show up.
Honest, Available, Consistent, Intellectually Curious, Generous of Spirit and God-Loving. These are the characteristics and qualities that are most important for me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Symphony of Leaves Tea Co. is a purveyor of fine teas, sourced from single origin growers and artisan farmers from
historical tea producing regions around the world. We offer both orthodox teas and bespoke hand blended scented tisanes.
Our mission is to provide an exquisite tea experience that harmonizes with nature and nurtures the soul. We are dedicated
to sourcing the finest, sustainably-grown tea leaves, ensuring each cup delivers a symphony of flavors that delights the
senses and fosters a moment of tranquility in every sip. We strive to promote environmental stewardship and support
ethical farming practices, while fostering a community of tea enthusiasts who appreciate the art and tradition of tea.
Through our commitment to quality, sustainability, and mindfulness, we aim to inspire a deeper connection between
people, nature, and the timeless joy of tea.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Inconsistency and dishonesty breaks communial bonds, Vulnerability and humility restores relationships. Life and circumstances always going to bring forth the unexpected. There are times when respond inappropriately and create friction with others. The restoration of rebuilding trust is hard. It requires more than acknowleging the mistake, but the vulnerability of hearing how our actions have hurt someone.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Nearly 100% of my teas are imported from Asian countries. The tariffs imposed by the government have created a quagmire. They tariffs have wreaked havoc on my business. I almost quite. After a lot of contemplation and prayer, I decided that quitting wasn’t in the cards. The cost of doing business has gone up for everyone. I am not alone in navigating the challenge. My customers, albeit unhappy, have had to also navigate higher costs.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
Working fully remote. The pandemic, forced many people to work in remove environments. While that was necessary at the time, I am a firm believer that in-office part of the time helps employees develop profesional skills. It helps continue corporate culture. Virtual meetings are a good substitute, but they don’t help build commraderie.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I own a small business. That is a hill I will die on. Often, I hear people refer to themselves as entreprenuers. There is a CLEAR distinction between the two definitions. They are not synonomous.
As a small business owner, I am growing steadily. I am not changing an industry. I am expanding an existing one. I am not taking large risks. Just the opposite, I am growing slowly so that I manage my growth with predictability.
