Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Bergland.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up doing house projects with my dad — summers, weekends, whatever needed fixing. It was just part of life. When it came time to think about a career, I honestly wanted to do something completely different. But at some point I looked at this industry and saw how much room there was to do it better — more transparently, more professionally, more intentionally. That was enough to pull me in. I started my own company, and it’s gone through several evolutions to get to where it is today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the business side blindsided me. You can be great at the craft and still struggle because you don’t understand cash flow, or you’re confusing markup with margin, or you’re not charging correctly for what a job actually costs you. Nobody hands you a manual for that. Running your own company means wearing a lot of hats — sales, operations, finance, people management — and the real challenge is knowing which one matters most in a given moment. I’m still figuring that out, but I’m a lot further along than I was.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We’re a high-end residential renovation company based in Atlanta. We specialize in the full scope — kitchens, bathrooms, whole-home renovations — but what we’re really known for is how we work with interior designers. A lot of builders see designers as a complication. We see them as partners. Our job is to protect their vision and execute it without surprises.
What I’m most proud of is the standard we hold ourselves to operationally. The communication, the transparency around pricing, the way we handle the unexpected — because something always comes up in renovation. How you handle that moment is what defines you.
What sets us apart is that we’re not trying to be the biggest company in the room. We’re trying to be the most trusted one.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
People skills, without question. Renovation is an intimate business — you’re in someone’s home, disrupting their life, asking them to trust you with a significant amount of money. If you can’t connect with people, put them at ease, and communicate clearly under pressure, none of the technical stuff matters.
I’ve found that most problems on a job site aren’t construction problems — they’re communication problems. And the same goes for running a team. You have to be able to read a room, know when to push and when to listen, and make people feel like they’re in good hands even when things get complicated.
That’s the skill I’d double down on every time.
