Life & Work with Alisha Bright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Bright.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I had been a nurse for roughly five years and I had become burnt out with my working conditions: Low staffing, dangerous conditions, violence against nurses, disrespect from family members, no support from administration etc. I had started having a reputation for going on rants at work about how nurses are so undervalued. Whenever I had to search online about nursing topics, I always found articles and resources about “how to become a better nurse” or  “how to protect the patients.” There weren’t many safe places for nurses to say, “hey, this sucks.” I decided to start a blog that would empower nurses. I wrote about my love for nursing and about my hate for the healthcare culture towards nurses. Eventually, that evolved into Nurse Strong podcast.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has been interesting and therapeutic. I had to decide if I was going to speak my truth or constantly worry about how what I said affected other people. I have learned so much about business, perception, and the importance of a solid team.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a registered nurse with a diverse background in dialysis, behavioral health and cardiology. I have also been a clinical nursing instructor at Kennesaw State University. I love being a nurse but I would say my passion is in nurse advocacy. I am known for always encouraging nurses to take their breaks, use their pto and stand up for themselves! We are nursing professionals not doormats! I am most proud of creating a space for nurses to be viewed as real people with an abundance of talent. Nurse Strong podcast is different from other podcasts because its main focus is not nursing skills or patient care. Instead, Nurse Strong focuses on the nurse as a person. How we truly feel and our true interests. It promotes camaraderie, edification and positively changing the culture of nursing.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
There is so much that I am still learning. I would encourage others to be true to who they are and always have fun!
