Life & Work with Andrew Van Camp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Van Camp.

Hi Andrew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Andrew Van Camp, I’m a screenwriter, Director and Actor in Atlanta, Georgia.

I’ve grown up moving around the Midwest before residing in Atlanta.

I started out with an interest in music. Playing the guitar and piano. It wasn’t until my eighth-grade year where I started the roots for acting. I played the role of Polonius from Hamlet and seeing the reactions of the audience, my family and peers stapled inside of me that put to the side for a while.

My ideas towards the right career changed constantly with me. Picked up stage acting in high school but nothing major for the film industry. I went to school majoring in Architecture and Engineering, but nothing felt right. It wasn’t until I took a deep dive into myself did I realize what stuck with me and that was filmmaking.

My entry into film was luck. There was a feature film being shot by my university and I applied to be on set for two days. I skipped class to be there. On the second day, I was approached on set and asked to into a cage (part of the set) with Jamie Bell and Frank Grillo and “fight” with them. Of course, I said yes and two hours of prosthetics later, I was doing a small stunt with major actors.

From that point on, I slowly got onto more sets and landed an Agent where I’ve gone through endless auditions and booking some roles that have are slowly pushing my face and name out there around the world!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is a tough industry. Like all, finding how to stand out. Finding what you do that separates you from the other. That takes time, sometimes quicker for some than others.

Just stick with it and be confident in what you’re doing. The film industry is full of rejections, but there are some rewards too. Do what you can to put yourself out there. Eventually, someone will see you.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an Actor, Screenwriter, and Filmmaker.

I’m mostly known moreso with my acting roles. The biggest film I’ve starred in is a film called, Butterfly, playing the role of Travis. I’ve won multiple Best Supporting Actor awards from Los Angeles, Toronto, India, Sweden, and countless other cities with the film being nominated and won several awards around the world. The short promo is currently on Tubi and the feature is in the works with major studios.

What sets me apart is I have a curiosity and appreciation for each department of a film set. With my own personal projects, I enjoy writing, acting, directing, editing, etc. This allows me to see the full scope of anything that comes my way and broadens what I know and what I can bring to the table.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have to give credit to several University Professors. When I switched from Architecture/Engineering to Filmmaking, everyone in the film program was very supportive and continues to be a resource if I need them.

My Agents are another. For getting me in the room, and a chance at huge opportunities.
