Life & Work with Chris Pierce of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Pierce.

Chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, as all singers say, I’ve always been singing. I started out singing back up for my dad with my two brothers at church, sometimes we’d perform as a three piece doing little mini church tours. I sung in the school choir all the way from elementary to high school. I auditioned for American Idol, Xfactor, America’s Got Talent, Disney, Nickelodeon but, nothing ever stuck. Constantly being told No, being told I wasn’t good enough, I don’t know growing up was extremely hard and you’d think it would break me but I always said, “one day I’m gonna be famous so I don’t care”. Fast forward to junior year of college. I’m pursuing a degree in political science and sociology but I wasn’t happy, I was walking to work working overnight at a grocery store, getting up in the morning going to class, barely sleeping and just miserable! One day after my shift I was walking home and sobbing, I told myself you’re going to either lock in and do what you’ve always said you would or, give up and choose a life that you don’t want. Then I wrote Karma and put it out.

Fast forward just a year later my senior year of college I’m performing (my first performance ever btw) at Sunfest sharing a lineup with Adam Lambert and Lil Wayne!!

Fast forward to today I’m being interviewed by voyage while in the airport in Virginia after I just played a festival! I’ve booked everything thus far on my own, I make the choreography, I edit the videos, I find the video locations, I write the songs, anything that you see with Chris Pierce on it is all me and I’m just proud of the kid who never gave up on himself because now people know him in Seattle, LA, Atlanta, Miami, Orlando, New York, Toronto Canada, and so much more.

Hope this wasn’t toooo much!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Oh honey definitely not I’m not only black but I’m gay. There have been line ups I’ve been taken off because of who I am and how I present myself. But it wasn’t something that broke me down, you’re going to get a No. I developed really tough skin and learned that u just have to keep going. If a door was closed I found another way in. There’s always another way and I knew there was love out there for me I just had to find it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a popstar, a really gay one. I specialize in making music that yes of course makes u wanna shake your butt and dance but the music also tells of my experiences in life that a lot of the lgbtq community can relate to.

Going on 6 years now I’m proud that I’ve kept going. I’m proud that regardless of what has happened to me I’ve kept my goal at the front of my mind and decided to just take what I want. I never know how to answer what sets me apart from others, I’m just like a lot of the girls in Atlanta, a gay trying to make it happen, break in some doors, make change and bring representation to the fem Boys.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Just start. My friends always ask me how did you do this, how did you achieve this, you have to get your hands dirty before you polish up. I spent a lot of time growing up and learning who I was on my own and I think knowing myself has taken me really far. You literally just have to start even if u suck at first. I wish I knew to start stretching every night because girl my body is aching, everybody needs to stretch.
