Today we’d like to introduce you to Janessa Smith.
Hi Janessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began at just four years old when I discovered my love for singing and using my voice to glorify God. Born in the Bronx, New York, to Jamaican parents, I was raised in a Christian home where faith and worship are part of our everyday life. As I grew, I realized that music wasn’t just something I enjoyed it was God’s purpose for my life.
With the support of my family and my independent label, Inspired Recording, I began recording and releasing original gospel music. My debut single, One Day, introduced my ministry, followed by songs like He’s Able and Lift Him Up, which have encouraged listeners around the world.
Along the way, I’ve been blessed to receive recognition, including winning a Stellar Awards honor for Youth Project of the Year, along with additional nominations and industry recognition. Every opportunity has reminded me that success isn’t measured by awards but by lives being touched through the message of Jesus Christ.
Today, I continue to grow as a young gospel artist, songwriter, and worshipper. My goal is to inspire people of all ages to trust God, keep their faith, and know that with Him, all things are possible. This is only the beginning of the journey, and I’m excited to see where God leads me next.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Even though I’ve been blessed with amazing opportunities, there have been challenges along the way. As a young gospel artist, balancing school, family, ministry, and recording music hasn’t always been easy. There have been times when I’ve had to make sacrifices, stay disciplined, and keep trusting God even when things didn’t happen as quickly as I hoped.
I’ve also learned that not everyone will understand your calling or support your journey, but those experiences have made my faith stronger. Every challenge has taught me to depend on God, stay humble, and keep working hard. Through prayer, encouragement from my family, and remembering why I sing to glorify God I’ve been able to overcome those obstacles.
Looking back, I realize that every struggle has helped shape me into the artist and young woman I’m becoming. My journey is a testimony that when you stay faithful and keep God first, He will open doors at the right time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a gospel recording artist, singer, songwriter, and young minister whose mission is to use music to share the love and hope of Jesus Christ. I specialize in contemporary gospel music that encourages people to trust God, no matter what they’re facing. Every song I record is meant to inspire faith, bring hope, and remind people that God is always faithful.
I’m known for starting my music ministry at a young age and for staying true to my purpose of glorifying God through every performance and recording. One of the things I’m most proud of is being able to encourage people of all ages through my music while remaining committed to my faith. Receiving recognition, including a Stellar Award for Youth Project of the Year and other industry honors, has been an incredible blessing, but what means the most to me is hearing how my songs have touched someone’s life or strengthened their walk with God.
What sets me apart is that I don’t see music as just entertainment it’s ministry. I want every lyric, every melody, and every performance to point people to Christ. Even as a young artist, I believe God can use anyone who is willing to serve Him. My goal is to continue growing, reaching people around the world, and using the gifts God has given me to make a lasting impact for His Kingdom.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice to anyone just starting out is to stay true to who God created you to be. Don’t spend so much time comparing yourself to others or trying to follow every trend. Focus on growing in your gift, work hard, be patient, and trust God’s timing for your life.
One thing I wish I knew when I was starting out is that every part of the journey has a purpose. There will be challenges, delays, and moments when you wonder if you’re making progress, but those seasons are preparing you for what’s ahead. I’ve learned that success doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s important to enjoy the process while continuing to improve.
Most importantly, keep God at the center of everything you do. Talent can open doors, but character, humility, and faith are what will sustain you. Never forget why you started, and always use your gifts to make a positive difference in the lives of others. If you remain faithful, keep learning, and never give up, God will lead you exactly where you’re meant to be.
