Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Lukasik.
Hi Jason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our story began long before II Tone Def (pronounced “Two Tone Def”) officially formed. Greg and I have been friends since the seventh grade, although our friendship started in a pretty unexpected way. We both got kicked out of class at the same time and found ourselves sizing each other up in the hallway. At the time, Greg was the metalhead, while I was immersed in hip-hop. On the surface, we came from two completely different musical worlds, but music ultimately became one of the things that connected us.
Over the years, our friendship grew, and so did our shared interest in performing, entertaining people and exploring different styles of music. In 2009, we officially formed II Tone Def. What started as two longtime friends combining their different musical influences developed into a DJ partnership that has now lasted more than 17 years.
Since then, we have performed at a wide range of events and venues, built relationships throughout the Atlanta-area entertainment community and created countless memories together. We have played clubs, private events, weddings, breweries, themed parties, anniversary celebrations and large conventions, including Dragon Con. Every experience has helped us grow—not only as DJs, but also as performers, business partners and friends.
One of the things that has kept II Tone Def going is that we genuinely enjoy what we do and understand what each person brings to the partnership. We have different personalities, musical backgrounds and approaches, but those differences are part of what makes the group work. After all these years, we are still evolving, still taking on new opportunities and still excited every time we get the chance to create an experience for a crowd.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance 2 Tone Def with the rest of our lives. We are both fathers, husbands and working professionals, so especially in the early years, we were building the group while also raising young children, managing full-time jobs and handling all the responsibilities that come with family life.
Performing often means late nights, long drives, loading and unloading equipment, preparation before an event and recovery afterward. The audience may only see the hours we are onstage, but there is a great deal of work that happens behind the scenes. Finding the time and energy to stay prepared, promote ourselves and continue improving while still being present for our families has required a lot of planning and sacrifice.
Another challenge has been adapting as the music and entertainment industries have changed. Technology, social media, audience expectations and the way DJs find opportunities have all evolved considerably since we started in 2009. We have had to keep learning, investing in equipment and finding new ways to stay relevant without losing the identity that made 2 Tone Def unique in the first place.
Through all of it, our long friendship has helped us continue moving forward. We have learned to be patient, communicate, divide responsibilities and understand that life sometimes requires flexibility. The fact that we are still performing together after all these years is something we are very proud of.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Outside of 2 Tone Def, we have both built long-term professional careers that have helped shape the way we approach our work as DJs.
Greg works in logistics for a metal fabrication company, where organization, timing, communication and problem-solving are essential. Those same skills translate directly into live events, where equipment, schedules, setup times and last-minute changes all have to be managed carefully.
I have worked in the printing industry for more than 30 years. That career has taught me the importance of quality, consistency, attention to detail and delivering a finished product that meets a client’s expectations. Printing has also helped support my pursuit of music by giving me the stability to invest in equipment, continue learning and build 2 Tone Def over time.
As 2 Tone Def, we specialize in creating an experience rather than simply playing a list of songs. We take pride in reading the room, blending genres and generations, and adjusting to the energy of each audience. Because our own musical backgrounds are different, we bring a wide range of influences to every performance.
What sets us apart is the combination of professionalism, experience and genuine friendship behind the group. We understand that every event matters to the people who hired us, whether it is a wedding, private celebration, club night, brewery event or major convention. We show up prepared, work well together and focus on giving the audience a memorable experience.
What we are most proud of is the longevity of 2 Tone Def. We formed in 2009 and have continued growing while maintaining careers, raising families and adapting to a constantly changing industry. The fact that two friends who met in seventh grade are still creating and performing together all these years later means a great deal to us.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The quality that has been most important to our success is our ability to read a room and respond to the crowd in real time. We do not rely on a rigid playlist. We pay attention to the energy in the room, how people are reacting and where the night needs to go next.
Our different performance backgrounds have helped develop that instinct. Greg came from playing in live bands, including metal bands, so he understands stage presence, timing and how to connect with an audience through a live performance. I came from a dance background, performing on television, competing with dance groups, participating in talent shows and spending years learning what makes people move.
We share a love for many of the same styles of music, but our individual backgrounds also give us different perspectives. That combination allows us to pull from a wide range of genres and recognize when a crowd needs a change in direction, a familiar favorite or something unexpected.
At the heart of it, we are performers first. We understand that DJing is not just about playing good songs—it is about creating momentum, building energy and making people feel part of the experience. Being a dancer at heart definitely does not hurt, because I am always thinking about the music from the perspective of the people on the dance floor.
