Today we’d like to introduce you to Kalika Wade.
Hi Kalika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally a New Jersey native, I moved to GA to attend college. I graduated from the school of Film and Digital Media, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Sound Design, Audio Engineering from the acclaimed Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I also have an MBA and am currently pursuing a Ph.D.
When I studied at SCAD, I took courses in film production and grew even fonder of still photography. In order to put myself through school, I used to photograph clubs and events. Recently, I designed and launched my very own shoe line, Kali Shani shoes, made in Italy. Several years back, I started a small business, KW2Studios, a full service photography and graphic design studio with my husband, SCAD alumni and US Army Major Doniel K. Wade.
Over the years, I have executed quality photography for some of the most elite clients, including many celebrities. In addition, my photography work has been featured on celebrity media feeds, magazine publications, and on Atlanta’s radio stations. Today, I continue to focus on my passion for photography and business and enjoys educating others. I teach Digital Photography classes at Clayton State University and will continue to promote social change.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve hit many pitfalls along the way, including surviving heart failure and most recently fighting for my life after going three months with collapsed lungs from COVID-19. I am thankful for the blessing of overcoming the obstacles and am still pushing hard in my goals.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When shooting photography, I specialize in capturing a precious moment in a creative way by bringing the best out of clients. When a client is shy I know how to direct the photo shoot in order to get to client comfortable. In addition, I also specialize in photo retouching. If a client doesn’t like a wrinkle or scar, I know how to remove it.
Based on my new adventure as a shoe designer, I came up with the concept to exude confidence and strength, which is a reflection of some of the obstacles I’ve been through in my life. I want a woman to feel beautiful and slay in the room and feel confident.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always considered quirky and different because I viewed life in a different viewpoint. I’ve always had an interest in photography. When I was a little girl, I used to carry around a 35-millimeter film camera in my purse. I always would go to Walmart and develop them at the lab. I’ve always enjoyed capturing moments.
