Life & Work with Kim Watchara of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Watchara.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey began as a server at Nan Thai Fine Dining, where I worked for over seven years. During that time, I absorbed the art of hospitality and the meticulous attention to detail that defines true fine dining. It was also there that I discovered my passion for creating desserts, and I was fortunate to share my homemade sweets with many guests, including professional golfers. Those moments gave me the confidence to believe in what I truly love.

When I later moved to Woodstock, I began working at Roberto’s. Being the only Asian in the restaurant, guests often asked me where I was from, and I proudly told them, “I am Thai.” One day, a couple invited me to cook for them at their home. I happily agreed, but I explained with honesty: “The food I make won’t taste like restaurant—it will taste like home, made with curry pastes my mother sends me directly from Thailand.”

That dinner became a turning point. The couple shared their experience on Facebook, and soon after, many people began reaching out. It was then I realized it was time to bring together my seven years of fine dining experience and the authentic, home-style flavors I grew up with. Today, I share both with my guests, offering not just a meal, but a unique and heartfelt dining experience.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s definitely not a smooth process, as our goal is to deliver an experience comparable to fine dining in a restaurant. We have to manage every detail—from preparation, presentation and transportation to bringing in any necessary equipment, as not every home is fully equipped for this level of service.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a private chef and the owner of Proud Thai Private Dining. I focus on modern Thai cuisine, bringing a fine dining experience into people’s homes in a more personal and intimate way.

I’m also currently working with Chef Ong to develop a Thai pop-up restaurant concept, Charm at 778 Omakase Table, which is Thai tasting experience rooted in tradition, but not confined by it.

I’m known for creating experiences that go beyond just the food—it’s about the feeling, the atmosphere, and making each dinner special and memorable.

What I’m most proud of is building this from my own journey and being able to share Thai culture in a way that feels both refined and approachable.

I think what sets me apart is that I’m one of the first Thai private chefs in Atlanta offering a true in-home fine dining experience. Beyond the flavors, I really focus on the small details and service—making sure everything feels thoughtful, smooth, and taken care of for my guests.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most? People here don’t judge. I love to drink, and back in Thailand, if I had a drink before sunset, people would be like, “How were you raised?” 😂
But when I first moved here, my friends took me out for mimosas on a Sunday morning—and that’s when I knew… okay, this is my place lol.

What I like least? People here are so nice—sometimes too nice. I’m never 100% sure if they really like my food or if they’re just being polite and don’t want to hurt my feelings 😂
