Life & Work with Richard Shaw Jr of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Shaw Jr.

Hi Richard, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Making of a Musician: Richard Shaw Jr.’s Journey

For Richard Shaw Jr., music has always been more than sound — it’s been part of his very existence since before birth. His mother recalls how, even in the womb, he would kick and move whenever music was playing, almost as if he was already keeping rhythm with the world.

That early connection to music blossomed into a life-changing moment at the age of 10. During a Boy Scouts camping trip, Richard heard Kenny G on the radio for the first time. The soulful notes of the saxophone struck something deep within him. “It was my epiphany,” Richard recalls. “I knew right then I wanted to play the saxophone.”

He returned home and told his parents about his dream. What followed was a journey shaped by faith, discipline, and relentless practice. Countless hours of prayer and persistence turned that childhood revelation into reality. Today, Richard Shaw Jr. is celebrated as a celebrity saxophonist, captivating audiences with the same passion that sparked in him as a boy under the stars at a campfire.

“Music has always been my calling,” Richard says. “And I’m grateful every day that I get to live that calling and share it with the world.”

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Richard Shaw Jr. may be celebrated today for his electrifying performances as a celebrity saxophonist, but behind the spotlight is a journey marked by struggle, pain, and perseverance. His road has been anything but smooth. Like so many who chase greatness, every moment of success came only after navigating seasons of failure, disappointment, and hardship.

Richard has been open about his battles with chronic depression and bipolar disorder — battles that once pushed him to the edge of life itself. In one of his darkest moments, he attempted suicide by swallowing more than 20,000 milligrams of pills. “I thought my story was over,” Richard reflects. “But instead, that moment became the beginning of a new chapter.”
Choosing to fight for his life, Richard transformed his pain into purpose. Together with his family, he founded Believe Again Global, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit committed to breaking the stigma of mental illness, raising awareness, and offering hope to those who feel unseen.

“Our mission is deeply personal,” Richard shares. “We want to inspire resilience, provide resources, and remind people around the world that no matter how broken life feels, there is always a reason to believe again.”
Through Believe Again Global, Richard and his family aspire to impact over one billion lives — creating a global community where recovery is possible, hope is alive, and no one has to fight their battles alone.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc.?

I provide next-level entertainment that 99% of audiences have never seen or experienced before. As a celebrity saxophonist with over 26 years of professional experience, I’m celebrated for creating unforgettable “Wow Factor” moments that leave lasting impressions. I specialize in captivating and connecting with diverse audiences, whether through intimate performances or large-scale productions with my full band. My signature style blends raw talent, showmanship, and energy, always delivered with the highest standard of excellence. I’m also known for a unique performance technique—playing up to three saxophones at once in perfect harmony—which never fails to surprise and amaze audiences.

What are you most proud of?
I’m most proud of my ability to transform events into extraordinary experiences. For me, it’s not just about the music—it’s about creating joy, unity, and inspiration that people carry with them long after the performance ends. Knowing that I’ve made someone’s milestone moment unforgettable is the greatest reward.

What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is that I don’t just perform—I create an experience. My technical mastery is important, but it’s the connection I make with audiences that makes my performances memorable. Every show is personal, powerful, and unique. “Excellence in its finest musical form” isn’t just my slogan—it’s how I move, speak, live, and breathe. That commitment to excellence, combined with my one-of-a-kind performance style, is what truly separates me from others.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was far from the spotlight. As a child, I was timid, shy, and very much an introvert. I often preferred quiet moments of reflection over large groups, choosing to observe rather than be the center of attention. Social settings felt overwhelming, and I carried a deep sense of reservation that made it hard to imagine ever standing on a stage in front of people.

But in that quietness, I developed a sensitivity and depth that would later shape me as an artist. Being introverted allowed me to listen closely, to feel emotions deeply, and to connect with music in a profoundly personal way. Music became my first real voice—the place where I could express everything I struggled to say out loud.

What started as a quiet child retreating inward eventually evolved into the foundation of my artistry today. The same shy, introverted boy who once avoided the spotlight now steps onto stages with confidence, using music to speak to hearts in a way words never could.
