Life & Work with Samurae

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samurae.

Samurae, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started sharing my gifts on SoundCloud in 2012 singing and rapping songs that I genuinely liked then I kind of made it my thing to keep recording myself however I could – tape recorders, MP3 Players, the slide phone, anything. It wasn’t until 2019 when I went to a REAL recording studio and made my first full song to release on of course, SoundCloud called ‘Fairytale Love’. By then, I was consistently posting a cappella song covers, poems, and freestyles on my Instagram under a different name (Roxe), still tucked away from the Pittsburgh creative scene until I was invited out to a poetry event to perform my poetry. From that show, people gravitated to me, and before I knew it, I was doing LOTS of shows. I changed my name shortly after to ‘Samurae’ to better fit who I felt deep inside I was, I honestly jumbled the letters of my full name together to make it and it just made sense – powerful. Now, I carry that power I embody wherever I go, shining within any room and on any stage in hopes of uplifting, inspiring or encouraging at least one person. My voice is my paintbrush, words to direct and each note – the colors, painting onto time whatever my heart needs.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been scattered, scary at times but exciting in others. I was treated really foul by someone I thought loved me and that I could trust in the beginning of my career. Battling with depression, anxiety, and ostracizing from others held me back from expressing myself fully, but I pushed through with God’s grace, now stronger than ever and honored to be on this journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am Art creating art through my voice and words. I’m a songstress and poet who creates pattern-shifting pieces with the goal to inspire, uplift, and encourage others. I’m not here to entertain – I’m here to express in the present, leaving the atmosphere changed for the better. I can’t relate to today’s culture, so I must have a purpose to bring something different and needed. I’m grateful for all those that I’ve contributed to the growth of. We are that Tree of Life.

What makes you happy?
Having peace and then being able to share that with others, then seeing them bask in their own unique bliss. I like to make people smile, laugh, and believe in themselves again. I love to see it; makes me feel like I’m doing something good.
