Today we’d like to introduce you to Serica Emani Weaver.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In the year of 2015, upon graduating from Lucy Craft Laney High in Augusta, Georgia, I went off to attend the illustrious Spelman College here in Atlanta. Throughout my matriculation at Spelman, I found it extremely challenging to choose my field of study. I went from Psychology, due to my passion for mental wellness and mental health counseling, to English, because of my passion for writing, and lastly to Studio Art, where I discovered myself as a creative at heart. I always loved the idea of being multifaceted. However, at the time, I had no idea of how I would bridge all of my passions together.
Fast forward to a life changing experience of studying abroad and leaving Spelman in the year of 2017, I began my journey as a creative at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I’ve always been fascinated by the opportunity to hone my creative abilities while striving to change the way people see the world of design. Studying Interior Architecture gave me a different perspective on how to accomplish that goal. In every design project, I took on the challenge to foster a diversified worldview with an eclectic style and focus on social needs. The knowledge and wisdom gained from a variety of experiences in college lead me to publish my first book, “Love, Serica: A free spirit’s journey to living, breathing, and existing authentically.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been beautiful and full of growth, but far from smooth. Throughout my journey to authorship, I felt isolated, but also moved by the spirit to keep creating. At times, I pushed myself way too hard. I’ve learned and am still learning to show myself grace. I believe my journey was less about the “plan” and more about the strength I’ve gained from being thrown off track. It built a great amount of courage and character. Amidst all of the chaos, I always find a way to re-center. I have to remind myself that the darkness will fade and the light that I’ve always had will soon resurface. There were many times I wanted to quit because of the fear of being inadequate and unqualified. What kept me going was knowing there was someone out there waiting for a little piece of hope- a little piece of light- anything that said, “I see you.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multifaceted creative with a background in visual arts and Interior Architecture. I am also the author of “Love, Serica: A free spirit’s journey to living, breathing, and existing authentically.” My book includes insights on mental wellness, self-elevation, the importance of healthy dialogue, establishing boundaries, and determining non-negotiables when striving to break generational curses. As a believer of adding light to every dark spot in the world, I strive to use my voice to share my knowledge and experiences across the globe.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up as an only child in a single parent home gave me a sense of independence, but also sparked my giving nature. Because I didn’t have anyone around, I took interest in finding community. I was always told I had an old soul. I was blessed with a kind and caring heart, and a self-less and nurturing spirit. My love for people led me to consistently find ways to give or brighten someone’s day.
