Life & Work with VALERIE BURGOS

Today we’d like to introduce you to VALERIE BURGOS.

VALERIE BURGOS

Hi VALERIE, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve studied acting since high school. In college, I studied Digital Broadcast and Journalism with a minor in Spanish (to strengthen my spanish writing skills). Shortly after graduating, I was offered a part time production assistant position at Univision 34 Atlanta. I absorbed as much information as possible, including knowledge that would later lead me to be one of the few female technical directors for the company nationwide. In the meantime, I was also offered to be the reporter for a new tech segment for the newscast. I was able to incorporate my acting skills with my reporting knowledge and soon after, the segment was a total hit! Years later, I became the full time technical director for the station and reporter for tech segment.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. I made a lot of mistakes while learning more formal spanish; some of those went on air. Mistakes were made while learning how to direct the show.. and learning how to write my segment. It’s been a very bumpy road, but I’m so thankful for every person that has coached me along the way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a technical director, I edit the videos that go on the newscast. Each one serves a special purpose for the show, and I strive to make them each as unique as possible. Nevertheless, I get to collaborate with the producer to make the show as entertaining and informative as possible. That’s not counting the segment I write, record, edit and produce on my own. It has to be as interactive as possible for the audience to tune in.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I love people too much.. also, tough times create tougher people. During that time, i was faced with the most amount of work possible, and I had to either sink or swim. No in between.
