Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Glover.
Hi Victoria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I introduce myself as Victoria Glover, M.S., APC (Associate Professional Counselor), and as a therapist with plans to launch a platform that will cater to women of color and simultaneously share the gospel with the world, and I definitely want to note that was not always the plan. I am from a pretty small town- Cordele, GA to be exact. I grew up in a multiracial household, so I can really say my appreciation for diversity and inclusion started at a young age. As a child, I didn’t know I would grow up to be a counselor, but I knew I wanted to be in the helping profession in some capacity. I attended college at the University of Georgia (Go Dawgs!) and got involved with UGA Housing, where I worked mainly with aiding in minority retention for freshman students. I grew into my role as an advocate, connector, and mentor for minority students in the freshman dorms. This spurred my idea and desire to go into counseling- where I could study how to continue to serve as an advocate and safe space for others as a professional. I attended Mercer University in Atlanta and now hold a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Upon graduating, I worked a couple of agency jobs and am proud to say that I work in Private Practice at Worth, Wisdom, Wellness center in Atlanta, GA- a practice that is built to cater to women of color and assist in helping clients meet their mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness goals. I think it’s particularly interesting how I didn’t think that I would end up in Private Practice- and looking back, I wasn’t confident enough to pursue it. Now, I’m one year away from being a fully Licensed Professional Counselor, and I aim to eventually be in private practice full time. When I think about how I got to where I am now, I can emphatically say that God has brought me through certain circumstances and given me a passion for advocating for mental and spiritual health for black women, especially women that identify as Christian. In 2021, I have launched my independent platform and you can find me on Instagram @thevictoriouscounselor. I am the host of The Victorious Counselor Podcast: a podcast that is centered around mental health, the intersection of science and scripture, and the journey to Healing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. I can definitely speak to the rejection piece- actually, being rejected by my top 2 choices for graduate school and thinking that maybe the counseling profession wasn’t for me. What I didn’t realize was that was Imposter Syndrome at its finest, making me feel as though I wasn’t fit for a place that I knew God had called me to. Even within my first year of working- it was HARD work. I felt like a fish out of water once again, questioning what I was doing and if I was in the right field. Things didn’t get better until my most recent job switches and really finding my stride at my current places of employment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work full-time at a Community Mental Health agency in Atlanta, GA and part-time at Worth, Wisdom, Wellness, where I see private practice clients. My niche is working with women of color ages 18-35 who have experienced a trauma, both more shocking and then emotional traumas- and I identify as a counselor of faith. I am trained in a trauma treatment modality called Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and take pride in my ability to use my expertise and knowledge of neuroscience and trauma concurrently with my faith at my clients’ request. I see my clients finding true Healing in cultivating and strengthening their relationships with God. I am proud of my platform that I have created to help disseminate information regarding the intersection of mental health and faith. You can find me on Instagram @thevictoriouscounselor, and my podcast that I host, “The Victorious Counselor Podcast”, which is now available on all major streaming platforms!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love how much Atlanta has to offer. From the eateries to Skyline Park, to The Beltline, there’s ALWAYS something to do. I think what I like the least is pretty on-par with what everyone else would say- the traffic.
