Life & Work with Yasmine Julien of Kennesaw, GA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmine Julien.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey in education began with a strong love for mathematics that started back in middle school. My 7th and 8th grade math teacher helped me see math not just as numbers and procedures, but as something meaningful, challenging, and empowering. That experience stayed with me and ultimately shaped the path I chose for my career. I knew early on that I wanted to help students experience that same sense of confidence and excitement in learning math.

I began my career as a math teacher, where I spent many years working directly with students and helping them build strong conceptual understanding. Over time, I grew into roles that allowed me to support learning on a larger scale, serving as a math instructional coach, assistant principal, and eventually principal. Each role deepened my understanding of how students learn, how teachers grow, and how important it is to create environments where learners feel supported and capable.

Across every position, my passion has remained the same, and that is to help students develop confidence and genuine understanding in math. That passion eventually led me to open Excel At Math, where I can focus directly on supporting students and families in a more personalized way. Today, my goal is to help every child see that math is not something to fear, but something they can understand, grow in, and even enjoy, just as my own teacher inspired me years ago.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any new venture, there have definitely been areas for growth along the way. As a new business owner working in a new state, much of the journey has involved a learning curve, understanding the local landscape, building awareness, and establishing meaningful relationships within the community.

It has also been a rewarding experience that continues to expand my perspective and strengthen my work. Each step has provided opportunities to connect with business owners, families, grow professionally, and build something meaningful that supports students in their math learning journey.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My professional journey has always centered on helping students grow both academically and personally. Through years of experience in education, I have developed a strong understanding of how students learn and what truly supports long-term success. I hold a Master’s degree in Math Education and have also taught mathematics at the college and university level, experiences that have broadened my perspective and strengthened my commitment to helping students build deep, lasting mathematical understanding.

Today, I am the owner of Excel At Math, where I focus on helping students build confidence, strengthen conceptual understanding, and develop strong problem-solving skills. I specialize in identifying learning gaps and personalizing instruction so students can move from frustration to confidence. I am known for creating supportive learning environments where students feel encouraged, challenged, and capable of success.

What I am most proud of is helping students change the way they see themselves as math learners. Watching students shift from saying “I can’t do this” to approaching math with confidence is incredibly rewarding. What sets me apart is the combination of experience, instructional insight, and a genuine passion for math learning that allows me to support students academically while also helping them develop the mindset needed for long-term growth.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is spending time with my family. Moving to Georgia was a meaningful decision for me because it allowed me to be closer to my parents and siblings, and that has truly been a joy. Being able to share more everyday moments and stay connected with family has brought a lot of balance and happiness to my life.

Professionally, I find real happiness in seeing kids learn and grow. There is something special about watching a student begin to understand a concept that once felt difficult and seeing their confidence build. Knowing that I can play a part in helping students believe in themselves and enjoy learning is what makes this work so fulfilling for me.
