Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Kirsch.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I think soccer opened my mind to creative expression in general. I was always really inspired by the Brazilian soccer player Ronaldinho. I know that seems pretty far-fetched, but it’s really true! He was a player that brought his style to everything he was a part of. I tried to emulate that when I played soccer, and I think it translated to art later on in my life.
I moved to Atlanta when I was about 5. I took art classes in school, but I hated them. I was really stubborn during my teenage years and I really just wanted to draw and create during art class. I wasn’t the most teachable student at that age! I would draw cartoons, shoes, or soccer players no matter what the assignment was. I remember my art teacher not being too fond of me in high school. But really soccer became a bigger creative outlet for me towards the end of high school. I played in college so I didn’t have the time to take art classes then. Toward the end of college, I became more intrigued by art in advertising. So, after I graduated, I went back to school for art direction and design.”
Please tell us about your work.
Well first, I always try to bring something new and different to the table every time I create something. I want to make people see or experience things in a new light. I do a lot of branding work, like identity systems, typography, logos, ad campaigns, and some art direction. My process is always evolving, so I can’t get too comfortable with a certain style or medium. For me it’s really about finding the concept, the story, or the most interesting part of a project. After that, it’s – how do I tell this idea or concept in a new way? Do we exaggerate scale, utilize a different perspective, or go really abstract or minimal?
I definitely don’t have a specific message for my work as a whole. People are always going to interpret art or design in ways that are out of your control. I try my best to leave behind my personality and my perspective in my work but the rest is really out of my hands. At the end of the day, I’m just grateful to have a career in a profession where I can create and share my perspective.”
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
By having a positive impact on people. I hope I’m lucky enough to work on a lot of projects that can bring people joy or change their lives for the better. That could be anything from a new product design, a campaign to bring awareness to a certain cause, or any work for a brand that’s making a difference in the community.
As far as characteristics, I’d have to say curiosity. Being curious in the creation process is really important. A lot of great work comes from playing, experimenting, or imagining things in a new manner. If you skip that process, your work is going to look like everything else out there. Also, you need to be really knowledgeable across a variety of industries. Being knowledgeable is a responsibility in design. We understand the world through graphic design! Think about how we experience our daily commute, politics, or even healthcare. Design is a universal language, so if you aren’t curious and trying to constantly learn you aren’t going to be able to contribute as much.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can see some of my work on my website. And if I’m feeling really bold, sometimes I post work on Instagram
