Meet Amanda Gikas of Past the Gate

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Gikas.

Amanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Like many people in the industry, it all began when I was a kid. I grew up a theater kid doing community theater, church plays, school plays, and even a little modeling. I remember saying “I can’t imagine NOT being famous”. I wanted it more than anything. I have practiced accepting my Emmy, Academy Award, and/or Grammy more times than I care to admit. Honestly, any of those would have been fine with me. I don’t know that I was truly cut out to be an actor or singer, although my hairbrush/microphone and mirror in my childhood bedroom begs to differ. It has seen many concerts and acceptance speeches.

Life eventually pulled me in other directions (marriage, kids, jobs) until one moment reignited everything. My youngest said, “I want to be famous,” and the journey into the industry truly began. What I did know was that I was good at helping others see their potential and educating them on how to get there. I dug in and learned everything that I could for the next 10+ years. I helped my son learn about every aspect of the industry as I learned myself. Then it became clear what I wanted, and that was to be an agent.

Watching my son grow into the amazing talent that he is gave me life. When I am working with my talent now, it is the same feeling, the same rush. I get so excited when it looks like they are one step closer to their dreams. I want to be a part of that. This industry is full of gatekeepers. I want to help actors get “past the gate” (get it?). I am very open and honest about everything they need to do to get there. I even have a Skool platform full of free information for anyone. We were told nothing when we began. The agent signed him then went silent until he had an audition. Actors Access? What is that?? Thank goodness for Google. I want to do better for people.

When you begin a labor of love you have to love it, otherwise it is just labor. And I do love it. There is not much else in life that brings me this level of joy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Its definitely not been easy. But I do feel that true strength comes from overcoming obstacles. This industry is a roller coaster. The lows are extremely low but the highs are the greatest a person can experience. My biggest obstacle has been people underestimating me. I have encountered the good and the bad. But most people are on the same journey and are kind. Easily, the biggest obstacle for me have been the gatekeepers. Some people just don’t want to share information. But I certainly wasn’t going to let that stop me back when I began. I have made friends with some AMAZING people that I trust 100%. Kelly Young-Silva, owner of Words in Motion Acting Studio, is one of them. Occasionally you find a truly good soul and when you do, then you know you are where you need to be. She kept telling me this was my path, and I am glad I finally listened.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Past the Gate Talent Agency began with a dream, not a business plan. The industry doesn’t lack talent. It lacks guidance, education, and real advocacy for emerging actors.

Past the Gate was built to provide exactly that.

We prepare our talent to meet the standard and move past it. We believe being bookable is not defined by the length of a résumé, but by dedication, training, professionalism, and consistency. At some point, everyone had no credits.

At Past the Gate, we look beyond what’s “bookable on paper.” We sign talent, not credits.

We focus on:

-Training and work ethic

-Coachability and emotional availability

-Professional readiness

-Long-term potential

We submit talent before the industry thinks they’re ready because history shows that’s when it can happen,

Our philosophy is simple: Until it’s your turn, keep clapping for others. Community over competition.

At Past the Gate Talent, we are more than representation. We are partners in the journey and are committed to educating, protecting, and advocating for talent as they pursue the future they deserve.

The myths we reject are “Too Young”, “Too Old”, and “Not enough credits”. None of which are true and those beliefs keep people stuck.

If you mean it, you will make it.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
In this industry it is important to network and get to know others. I suggest film festivals, classes with other actors, and keep on eye on social media for events that you can attend to meet people. If you are truly a beginner, sign up on some background casting sites. You will meet all sorts of people that way! Find people that you mesh well with. Make sure their views and morals align with yours. Even if you begin one place and end up another, its ok. Keep moving and growing. Loyalty and character both matter as well. Always be the kind of person that if someone said anything negative about you, the other person would not believe it.

I recently went to Brian Beegle’s event where he celebrated 5 years of his casting agency, I met so many wonderful people in all aspects of the industry. I am a little bit of an awkward person, so it was a lot for me to go and not worry I might do something embarrassing like break into song or trip over my own two feet. But, those are the types of events that people should keep on their radar. You never know who you might meet.
