Today we’d like to introduce you to Asantai Thornton.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, I was born & raised in Cobb County, GA. I grew up singing in church with my siblings, eventually transitioning to attending a performing arts school called Young Voices United, from Elementary onto High school. From there I used the tools from performing & my own personal dreams to pursue a music career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not in the slightest lol. I grew up typically the odd ball out & didn’t have the strongest self esteem for a long time. Once I graduated High School, I knew if I followed through on making music my career, it also meant people being able to persevere me on an online scale too. However, once I made the decision to let go of anything I couldn’t control, I put myself out there & am now doing my first interview with VoyageATL. So I am extremely proud of myself and everything I had to heal from to get here.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Outside of being a vocalist, songwriter, & content creator. I’ve been drawing and indulging in arts and crafts my whole life. This led me to create a business called “BeatofherArt”, where I offer services in original art pieces & hairstyles. I specialize in portrait drawings, paintings, jewelry accessories & hair braiding. My art is known for its animated style while bordering realism. 2 things I’m proud of with this art journey is when I moved to Colorado for some time and had the opportunity to teach sip & paint classes at one of the only black owned sip & paints in Colorado, & in my time out there I was also able to work in a black owned Salon for the first time in general, taking my own clients & assisting the owner and my coworkers with locs & any braid down. My aura & positive attitude set me apart, artistically my turn around time & creativity keep me from staying “inside the box”.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a kid I was definitely always goofy & full of life. Around people I didn’t know I was a lot more shy, but always kind. In school I was studious, not a problem student, & most people knew me for singing in chorus or being goofy with my small group of friends. Art & music definitely have always been my safe space and I really enjoyed reading, watching movies & playing games with my family.
