Today we’d like to introduce you to Bereshith Adams.
Hi Bereshith, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been a nurse practitioner for ten years and it’s an honor and a privilege to take care of an individual when they are at their most vulnerable state. My specialty is general surgery and trauma. I take patient care and continuing education very seriously. So, over the course of ten years, I have become certified in wound care and hyperbaric oxygen treatment. I have also become more educated in medical marijuana and ostomy educated. During my time working in the health care industry, I kept seeing patient’s return to the hospital after they were just discharged due to complications from their surgery. I wanted to know what was going on in my community and what issues could we address to help improve patient care. At the hospital I was working for at the time, I presented multiple times about changes we could make to improve patient care and decrease readmissions. I thought to myself, with all the research and data I am presenting, there is no way they can turn down my proposal and advocacy for better patient care. Well, I was wrong and I was denied four times.
I thought that with my master’s degree in nursing, I would have a seat at the table and could help make a change. Well, I was maybe somewhat naïve because you can have a seat at the table, but it is where you sit at that is most important. So, I decided to create my own table and sit at the head even if it was by myself. My first company I created is called Proficient Nurse Practitioners and I designed the company in 2014 to meet the needs of clients at their doorstep. I would bring medical services to people’s homes or consult with them over the phone. The services I provided were post-operative care after surgery/trauma, wound care, infusion therapy, APRN advocacy, fitness and nutrition consultation, and medical marijuana consultation.
Even though my company was small and just myself, I felt that I was making a difference in my community one patient at a time. If I could prevent a patient from being readmitted, going into the emergency room for no reason, healing their wounds, and consulting them so they can navigate through this complex health care system, then that was a great feeling even though millions of people are not watching.
As time went on, I started to notice that a lot of the men that I encountered would have abscesses or skin irritations that could have been easily prevented. I would mention to my male clients the importance of exfoliating, prepping your skin before you shave, cleaning/replacing your clippers, and moisturizing your skin. My male clients would not have a clue what I was talking about. Then I realized that most men typically did not have a skincare regimen of their own. Instead, if any, they would just mimic the skincare regimen of their significant other.
So, I decided to develop a holistic model where I can give medical advice and offer skin products at a reasonable price. I developed my wellness company called Green Logic which allows individuals to purchase already made, do-it-yourself kits or customized products. I incorporated different types of cannabidiol (CBD) into my products. The reason being is because it provides high-quality moisture and less comedogenic effects. I use full-spectrum CBD because it has multiple cannabis plant extracts, including cannabinoids, terpenes. It may also contain up to 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid in the cannabis plant that produces a “high” feeling in people. However, there is such a low amount is not strong enough to have significant psychoactive effects. I also use broad-spectrum, which has a range of naturally occurring compounds from the cannabis plant but typically no THC. Lastly, I also use CBD isolate, which is a pure form of CBD. It contains no other cannabis plant compounds.
I designed my company because I wanted men to learn how to make their own skincare products if they desired. Also, it makes for a great date night when you and your significant other are making body butters and exfoliants together. You get to know each other literally on a deeper level. I wanted to keep Green Logic simple and not too complex, which is the reason why when you purchase a body butter, there is only one oil. I did that purposefully because you can now see which creams and oils works better for your skin. A personalized care plan is very beneficial because we all know that not one size fits all. I took that same concept and embedded it in Green Logic.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Mostly anything that’s foreign to you is going to be difficult. One of the best fortunes I learned in college was, “the harder the struggle, the greater the triumph.” I still navigate through life with that fortune in the back of my mind till this very day. I live by it. When I started out, I could not get a team together because none of us knew anything about building websites, ecommerce platforms, wholesale pricing, shipping, marketing and calculating sales tax. Timing is everything because as you get older, everyone is busy trying to balance work life and family life. It is harder to take risks when you have so many other obligations. The major issue at the time was that there was not enough representation in the cannabidiol sector. This made it very difficult to get a reliable wholesale account. Everyone has an idea or the same idea but what separates you from others is your ability to execute the idea effectively and in a timely manner before the market becomes too saturated. So, with no team and time against me, I had to learn a lot of trades very quickly.
I still continued to work a part-time job, did full-time consulting, and exercised four to five days a week. I used the money to funnel into Green Logic. I paid people to teach me the cosmetic industry: how cosmetic production works and where to order your jars and labels. My medical background was very helpful because you have to write policies and procedures when you are going for a Manufacturer of Drugs, Cosmetic, and Medical Device license.
I had to become familiar with platforms such as WordPress, Shopify, and Squarespace to create my website. Also, Fiverr and Thumbtack became my best friend. I had initially hired someone on Thumbtack to develop my website and they could not deliver. I finally found the right developer on Fiverr. We still have a great relationship to this day.
I have experienced quite a few trials and tribulations trying to get Green Logic off the ground, but we all know you simply cannot rush success. I am extremely grateful to have a very supportive fiancée, family, mentors, and friends to keep me focused even during times when I thought I could not pull this off.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I was recruited in 2000 to run track for the University of Connecticut (UCONN). I ran for about three years and when I got accepted into the School of Nursing. I stopped running track to focus more on my studies. I went back to UCONN in 2008 to pursue my Master of Nursing in Acute Care. I graduated in 2011 and immediately started working in General Surgery/Trauma in Hartford, Connecticut for nine years before relocating. I created Proficient Nurse Practitioner’s in 2014 and developed Green Logic 2019.
How do you think about happiness?
I love spending time with my family and friends. When I was working as a nurse practitioner full time in the hospital, there was no flexibility. I missed out on birthdays, holidays, and vacations. That will not happen again because family is so important to me. This pandemic has taught that you never know when your time is up. Spending time with your loved ones is more important than anything. I actually pride myself on being a great uncle.
I love weightlifting but I am no gym head. I have done a couple bodybuilding shows over the past three years. I teach my clients the importance of being disciplined: watching what they eat and making time to exercise. There is no secret to the fountain of youth. However, I am a firm believer that if you eat well, exercise often, reduce stress in your life, and use good skincare products, you can live a life well fulfilled and look good while doing it.
