Meet Brooklyn Harrison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooklyn Harrison.

Brooklyn harrison

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My love of photography goes back to when I was about around five years old, I had a tiny Barbie film camera that I took photos with and just loved it, It was a natural love for taking photos from the very beginning. Throughout high school, I was constantly taking photos of friends, and when I thought about a career and what I wanted to do after school, I always went back to photography or having some form of my own business. I had zero desire to work in a traditional office and felt like I would die a slow (or maybe fast) death. It took several years to gain the confidence and focus to truly go for what I wanted and begin Brooklyn Photography. Now I’m continually pinching myself because I can’t believe I get to do this every day and call it work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For me, the biggest obstacle starting out was my own self-doubt and fear. I had for years been wishy washy and had not pursued my business hard core, I simply took the work when friends would ask and worked another job as my main income. I would say there are two things that really moved me forward in my business, 1- realizing this is what I want to do, I want to be a photographer, I have to give it my all and not look back and question my decisions. 2- finally coming to the realization that all the work and muscle that I put into my business is nothing if God isn’t in it. I came to a place of surrender and asked God to do what He wants with the business, whether that be grand success or no business at all. That is where my fear really fell away; none of my success is completely up to me and my grit. Do the work and see what God will do with it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Something that has been unexpected in my business is the mix of different photography work that I get to do. I went against a lot of advice starting out to pick one main genre of photography and focus on it. The reality is I love a lot of different photography and enjoy changing it up daily. Every day is different, and I love that. From beautiful weddings, families, and branding sessions for other business owners to product photography, I love it all. Something that has been a dream of mine for years and that I’ve been able to make a reality this last year or so is traveling to different destinations for weddings; combining my love of travel and photography has been a dream come true for me.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m not naturally a risk taker, I prefer to know exactly what I’m getting into and know the end result. Business and being self-employed in itself is a calculated risk. You are choosing to wear multiple hats in your business and hoping you make the right decisions and reach the right clients. However, I will take those risks every day, knowing that I’m creating a business that I love and have the freedom to live my life the way I want. For me, the risk is well worth the reward.
