Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Eubanks.
Hi Caroline, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In college, I interned at an alt-weekly newspaper, which was my first taste of what would become my career in writing. I was just learning about the digital landscape, and this particular publication allowed me to cover a lot of different subjects. I moved back to Atlanta after a year overseas, and it was like starting from scratch. Little by little, I was able to pitch stories to blogs and websites, using each as an example of what I could do. I started focusing on travel, specifically the Southeast, because I recognized that much of the region was being overlooked. It’s in this niche that I was able to find the most success, including an award-winning travel guidebook on the lesser-known places within the South. I’ve also expanded what I write about, which feels full circle to where I started out. I’ve now written two books, including the recently published A Boozy History of Atlanta: People, Places & Drinks that Made a City.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting out, the hardest part was getting my foot in the door. I don’t have a journalism degree, but I was able to network well enough and get introduced to the right people. These days, the toughest part is the business side, namely getting paid fairly and on time and dealing with publications going under and editors leaving their roles.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m most proud of the stories that make people think about a place differently. I think that’s the throughline of all my work is making you give something a second thought or make you want to dig deeper. Most of my work is centered around my own curiosity.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’ve had a lot of great mentors and friends who pushed me further. I’m a member of the Society of American Travel Writers and have several colleagues who have helped me along the way. I have a group of friends who are writers, and we often exchange tips and editor contacts. I also have to thank my friends and family who don’t always understand exactly what it is my job entails, but are always there to offer support.
