Meet Charlie Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Jones.

Hi Charlie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my photography journey at the age of 17 in my high school photography class. Later on in life as an army soldier, I used my skills to capture ceremonies and memorials while stationed at Fort Myer army base in Arlington, VA. While honing my craft I developed a passion for production, teaching himself how to capture beautiful moments on video. I have since gone on to produce television shows, movies, and documentaries.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
You name it, I’ve gone through it. I’ve been through every emotion and had to dig deep to bring myself out of some pretty challenging places. I’ve battled with PTSD and psychosis for quite some time now. This makes it difficult to really let my guard down and get vulnerable. I’ve found the more vulnerable I can allow myself to be, the more impactful my films are. Without my wife Kimiesha and our beautiful boys, therapy and above all God, I would not be where I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I truly love being a director of photography! Being able to work hand and hand with producers and directors in order to bring the ultimate vision to screen is so incredible to me. I treat being a DP like being a painter. Instead of brushes and paint, I use amazing crews of gaffers, grips, and art department to bring the director’s vision to life. It’s truly a group effort, and I love to play my part in it.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I believe the best teacher is a mix of personal experience and hands-on instruction. I joke about this a lot actually but I am a true believer in YouTube as a learning tool. I call it YouTube University. Some of my best instructors are Potato Jet, Mark Bone, and Brady Bessette. I encourage anyone starting out in the film industry who is looking to become a DP, to start with these guys. They’re experts in their fields and incredible teachers.
