Meet Dymond Anderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dymond Anderson.

Dymond, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Chicago but raised in ATL, Georgia, most of my life. At the age of 13, I started to show signs of being depressed; I didn’t reveal this to anyone because I wasn’t fully aware that I was even showing symptoms or dealing with depression. I didn’t get diagnosed professionally until the age of 21, where I was told that I not only did I have depression but anxiety as well. Once I was diagnosed, I felt kind of alone and I didn’t know how to help myself or even ask for help from the people around me. I didn’t realize how bad depression and anxiety could get if it is not managed properly until I had a very bad mental breakdown that lasted for almost two years. I tried reaching out to get help from my loved ones, but they did not know how to help me. My family and friends didn’t understand what I was going through or what a person with depression or anxiety even looked like. So, I was left to deal with my mental illness alone. After I overcame that dark period in my life, I was mad at the people around me for not being able to properly help me. However, I forgave them because I had to understand that they were not properly educated on what I was going through, so they couldn’t fully help me to the best of their abilities. This situation is what made me dive deeper into psychology and mental health.

Later on, I graduated from college in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After I decided to start my own mental health business so I could help other people who may of felt or dealt with the same things I have. I’ve always given advice even when I wasn’t in the proper mental space. Now I’ve learned how to overcome depression and anxiety and I want to help others by giving them a voice, so they no longer feel misunderstood. As well as help their loved ones to become more educated on mental health.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! When it comes to battling your own mental health as well as being the first one in your family to start a business, it can feel like a massive pressure to make sure you don’t fail. I use to be so overwhelmed with fear about what others would think, if they would even care about the things I am discussing and if I am even ready to step out and do something different.

What keeps me going is knowing that I could possibly change one person’s life by providing them with the resources they would need to overcome their own mental battles. Also, I can help a loved one be better equipped to be there for someone in their life that is dealing with mental health issues. I always wanted to have a person like that in my life, so I strive to be that person in other people’s lives. So, I’m glad I never gave up because If I can make a difference in one person’s life, that alone means the world to me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?Obscurities of the Mind was founded in 2021. Mental health is usually downplayed in many spaces such as the church, school, and even at home; because of this, people who tend to have a mental illness often feel misunderstood, alone, and unimportant. This often leads to them suffering in silence. Talking to someone about your mental health can be a hard conversation to have because the average person normally won’t understand how to deal with it. Mental illness is real, and many people suffer from it alone without any help. This is why we were created, to bring those people out of the darkness and into the light.

We want to be the light at the dark tunnel for you. So this is a space that will help people to not feel misunderstood or alone when it comes to having a mental illness. We specialize in educating people about different types of illnesses, how to cope, and how their loved ones can be a helping hand. We want to equip you AND your loved ones with the right tools to help gain a better understanding of dealing with mental disorders. Which is why we also provide mental health coaching for you and your loved ones. We believe the first step to getting your mind in order is to be around a healthy environment. Our overall goal is to help make you feel seen, welcomed, heard, valued, loved, and supported.

What are your plans for the future?
Right now, I am in the process of creating a podcast/YouTube channel, where I will be interviewing people about their own mental health journey and how they cope/deal with it. As well, I am in the process of creating an official website for this business.

In the future, I hope to be able to speak to young adults transitioning from high school to college about the importance of mental health.
