Meet Jasmine Carson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Carson.

Hi Jasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As far as I can remember I’ve always had a love for people! It’s safe to say I’ve never met a stranger. As a young child, I remember being the first one to talk to the new kid or the “quiet” person. I always wanted people to know that if I’m around, they had a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, a safe space to be themselves. I’m a military brat. That experience helped me appreciate the value of each persons unique story. I’ve carried my passion for people throughout my educational journey. In 2012 I received my Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Fort Valley State University. I went on to pursue various career paths from the classroom to the boardroom. Each opportunity showed me the value of listening and meeting the needs of people, decision making, and providing solutions. These experiences helped me to not only see how my gift was making room for me but that it was needed in these environments. The gift of song has been another avenue in which I have been able to learn about myself and others.

My love for music is deeply rooted in my childhood and has threaded itself through my life’s journey. The church has been instrumental in my development. It allowed me to witness and explore creativity first hand. I experienced the pressure, discipline, skill, and responsibility that comes with using your gifts. I patterned my own journey after what I experienced there. This led to me forming relationships with more and more Creatives. I became more aware of the mental, physical, and spiritual work that is required to honor your gift, and I share that with anyone who will listen. Every experience, from singing at the kitchen table with my granddaddy to touring with Grammy Award Winner Tasha Cobbs Leonard helped to reveal my heart for Creatives. This is the foundation of my business and my brand. I’m a Southern Belle that comes from a long line of love, support, and determination. My family is everything to me. Everyday, I reap the fruit of their sacrifice. I am unconditionally loved by my husband, and I’m honored to “do life” with him. My parents are my reason. My sisters are my best friends. My supporters are unmatched! God is my ALL. It’s all happening and sustained by and through Him.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In my lifetime, I had successfully mastered how to “look” like I was doing GREAT! Meanwhile, my mind was a WAR ZONE! I allowed my insecurities to create a home in my mind and that impacted everything, especially my creativity. I found that I rarely enjoyed much of anything that I was involved in because I was constantly worried about what people thought about me. On the outside, I was as confident as they came.

In my mind, I’m wondering how do I look? How do I sound? Did they laugh at my joke? Did I sound smart enough? I was a validation seeker. My gift was only as good as the person that told me it was. I didn’t know how to fail without being mean to myself. I chose to focus on the past and create future scenarios that didn’t exist, not realizing that I was paying for it in the present. I engaged in overthinking and planning myself in to a frenzy, hoping to control the desired outcome. I was attempting to save myself from the embarrassment I associated with failure. These where all excuses not to act, and indicators that I was not experiencing the fullness of my gifts. In areas that I could have been learning and loving myself, I allowed intimidation to be my portion. I wasn’t optimizing my full potential because I didn’t love myself or my gifts like I said I did. I didn’t believe in it like I said I did.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I truly believe I am who I am today because of those who have poured in to me. I have invested time and money in to mentorship in my personal, educational, and creative life. I have benefited greatly in information, opportunities, and monetary gain. I understand that as skilled as I am, I don’t know everything. The right Mentors are cheat codes! In my experience, they have been key to my development through instruction, accountability, and support. Mentorship is valuable because they believe and trust you enough to give you access to their knowledge, struggle, and overall experience for your betterment. When looking for a mentor, I advise that you get very clear on what your goal is and why you desire mentorship. Also be clear on what the goal of your mentorship is. Then do your research for mentors that align with those needs. Same thing for networking.
