Meet Johanna Lyew-Ayee of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Lyew-Ayee.

Hi Johanna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in the vibrant city of Miami, Florida, I have spent over a decade pursuing my passion for music as a professional singer. Despite my early shyness, which kept me from joining choirs or bands, my love for singing was ignited by icons like Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Jessica Simpson, and Nelly Furtado. My journey began to blossom in middle school when I finally revealed my talent by entering a singing competition. This pivotal moment marked the start of my path.

At 17, I met a transformative vocal coach (and now dear friend) who believed in me and helped me overcome my fears. With her guidance, I performed at my high school talent show and landed my first audition for a live band, propelling my career into full swing. Since then, I have had the opportunity to travel the country, sharing my passion with others. Inspired by my journey to confidence on stage, I opened my own vocal studio, coaching aspiring singers who struggle with self-doubt and helping them find their unique sound. My mission is to empower others to embrace their voices and share their stories with the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has certainly had its ups and downs, and starting over in Atlanta after leaving Miami was no small feat. Relocating to a new city meant rebuilding my network from scratch, which posed significant challenges. I faced the daunting task of establishing my vocal studio while simultaneously searching for paid opportunities as a singer. There were moments of self-doubt and insecurity, especially as I navigated new environments and sought to make connections in a competitive industry.

However, perseverance paid off. Through hard work and determination, I gradually built relationships and gained recognition for my talent. Today, I’m proud to say that I have a full calendar and am able to do what I love every day. My experiences have ignited a passion in me to support other aspiring singers who may be grappling with the same challenges I once faced—struggles with shyness, insecurity about their voices, and the discomfort of performing in front of others.

I understand firsthand how difficult it can be to build stage presence and confidence, and I aim to reach as many of these hopeful artists as possible. My goal is to create a safe space where they can grow, not only as vocalists but also as confident performers ready to share their unique stories with the world. It’s a continuous journey, but I’m grateful for how far I’ve come and excited to help others find their voice along the way.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’ve spent more than ten years as a professional singer, performing and helping others as a vocal coach. I focus on helping aspiring singers find their unique voices and gain the confidence to perform in front of others. In my vocal studio, I offer coaching that covers both technique and the emotional side of singing. My students know me for creating a welcoming space where they can express themselves without worrying about being judged.

What sets me apart from others in the industry is my personal journey—I understand the emotional hurdles that come with performing, from shyness to insecurity. I draw from my own experiences of overcoming these challenges, which allows me to connect with my students on a deeper level. I take pride in helping them not only find their vocal strength but also discover their individual artistic identity.

I’m especially proud of how my vocal studio has grown and the difference I’ve made for my students. Watching them go from shy and uncertain to confident performers is incredibly rewarding. My aim is to help as many new singers as I can, supporting them through their first challenges and celebrating their progress. Seeing them perform and share their stories is what makes this work so meaningful to me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has definitely been part of my journey, showing up in moments that led to unexpected opportunities. I’ve noticed that chances often come when luck meets persistence. For example, meeting my vocal coach was a lucky break that changed my life. She knew a band leader who was looking for a singer. While luck put me there, it was my determination and effort that helped me make the most of it.

Preparing for that audition was not just about being lucky; it was about dedicating countless hours to honing my craft. I practiced tirelessly, applying the techniques my coach had taught me, and pushed myself to build stage presence and confidence—skills that didn’t come easily at first. When the day of the audition arrived, it was the culmination of both luck and relentless effort. I walked into that room ready to showcase my talent, knowing that I had put in the work to be prepared.

During my singing career, I’ve come across many chances that seemed lucky, like meeting someone at a networking event or being asked to perform at a local venue. Still, it was always my persistence and dedication that helped me take advantage of those moments. Being ready when luck shows up has shaped my path. I truly believe that while luck can open doors, it’s hard work and perseverance that lead to real success. My experiences have shown me that opportunities often come when preparation meets life’s surprises.
