Hi Josh, thank you so much for sitting down with us again. For folks who might have missed our initial interview, can you start by briefly introducing yourself?
My name is Josh Universe, I am a painter and graffiti artist. I am originally from Mobile, Al, but now I work mainly work between Atlanta and Miami.
Are you inspired by other artists and painters? If so, who are they and what about them inspires you?
Two of the biggest artists who influence me are Kehinde Wiley and Takashi Murakami. I first stumbled upon Murakami as a kid, and was instantly obsessed. His originality, vibrant colors, and imagination began inspiring and shaping my young mind’s creativity. I was later introduced to Kehinde in my first year of college. His stunning portraits and artistic ability made me want to push myself to become an even greater artist. Also, to see an African American artist reach the level he has, showed me that my dreams were truly attainable. Daniel Arsham and Hajime Sorayama are two artists I’ve newly found myself being intrigued by, as well.
What has been the thought process behind your recent paintings?
My recent work has been some of the purest art I’ve made thus far in my career. It is a mirror of the humble lifestyle I’ve lived this past year. My father had been battling terminal cancer for over a year. So I began creating these powerful, beautiful and vibrant pieces to escape the stressful pain of life, and to also lift his spirit. I wanted to show beauty and light through my art, as a way to give us hope.
What is your ultimate goal for your art career?
I will become one of the biggest artists to come out of the Southeast. After that, I will continue pushing as my high as my ambition takes me. Ultimately, I want to find a way to give young artists encouragement and direction with their careers. But to do that on a larger scale, I need a strong voice and platform. I want to show them the things I wish someone had shown me, coming into this field.
It was so great to reconnect. One last question – how can our readers connect with you, learn more or support you?
