Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellan Spears.
Hi Kellan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was around 5, my dad asked if I wanted to go watch a dirt go kart race? From a really young age, I already loved Matchbox and other cars but now the love for racing has been sparked! Much like my grandfather, Ed Moore, who was an avid race fan and SCCA racer. Not long after attending the kart race, we found a marketplace race ready kart to get started. After my parents decided I was really interested, we purchased a new kart and finished 4th in my first series, not terrible for my first time! After 6-7 years and multiple dirt oval placements and three championships later, I tried an asphalt road course kart. I never turn back and won a championship in my first season! Since then, I moved up a class to continue to improve my skills!
Which leads me to now and paving the path to making this a career! Not only a career but enabling me the opportunity to make a difference for others and I am working on the best way that I can do that! Recently, I moved into US Legends cars with Joe Ryan Racecars development program.
Driving a Legends Car vs a Kart is different in a couple of ways. A Legend is a full roll cage, bucket seat, five-point harness and changing gears on a sequential clutch. Even though it felt a little weird at first, with very limited moving room, I adapted quickly to the new equipment. In comparison – karts have no roll cage, no seat belt, and a single speed clutch.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We were initially told a night of racing cost the same as a nice dinner out…not even close, if you want to be competitive! LOL! We quickly realized that funding is a very big factor in being competitive and an integral part of this sport. I am quickly learning that this is more of a business than solely a passion! We are actively pursuing business partnerships and building individualized programs to best meet our partners needs. Not just a sticker on a car!
