Lela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age, beauty has been an integral part of my life, nurtured by my mother’s commitment to our hair appointments every Saturday at our beloved salon. Those weekends weren’t just about looking good; they ignited a spark within me. I was so captivated by the environment that I took on my first unofficial job there, sweeping hair, answering phones, and assisting wherever I could. This early exposure made me realize how much I loved the beauty industry.

At just 13, I began taking my own clients at home, turning my passion into practice. Fast forward to age 19, I made a pivotal decision to move to Atlanta and enroll in cosmetology school. It was a significant step toward gaining my license and legitimizing what I had been doing for years. After completion, I worked in various salons, eager to find my footing and learn from successful mentors in the field.

Driven by my passion, I eventually opened my own salon suite, followed by my first official salon, Lela D Hair Salon, in Smyrna, Georgia. As I navigated the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, I downsized to a small suite and then transitioned to my current venture, “My Salon Studios,” alongside a trending head spa, “Crowned Head Spa,” located in East Point, GA.

Beauty and self-care have always been woven into the fabric of my life, so it was only natural to integrate them into my career. There’s nothing more rewarding than transforming someone’s appearance, confidence,as well as mood and witnessing the joy it brings them. As I look forward to the future, I am excited about the endless possibilities that lie ahead in this ever-evolving industry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to success has certainly not been smooth. In the early stages of my career, I faced significant challenges, particularly in attracting new clients and valuing my services appropriately. It took time to build a steady clientele, which directly impacted my income and financial stability. During those initial years, I worked as a waitress to cover my bills, but I never wavered in my commitment to my dreams.

Additionally, I faced profound personal loss with the passing of my parents, which deeply affected me, especially after welcoming my daughter. They were my greatest supporters, and their absence left a significant void in my life. My parents were entrepreneurs themselves, and their teachings continue to inspire me.

The desire to create a better life for my daughter fueled my determination. She became my motivation to persevere, reminding me that giving up was not an option; she deserves the best I can provide. After enduring many ups and downs, I eventually found my footing and was able to create the lifestyle I had always envisioned.

I am incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from my friends and family during this journey. Their encouragement and prayers have been instrumental in helping me sustain my pursuit of success.

As a master cosmetologist and the proud owner of a head spa, hair salon, and salon suite business, I am passionate about enhancing both beauty and well-being.
