Today we’d like to introduce you to Mekayla J.
Hi Mekayla , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well, I’ve had a broad imagination since childhood. A core memory of mine is staying up late many weekends to watch movies with my father figure. I’ve always identified as a child of the arts, with creativity rooted deeply within me rather than worn externally, but I didn’t fully explore my talents until later in life. In 2019, my senior year of high school sparked my journey toward becoming a creative through my enrollment in the first Media/Audio curriculum at Cedar Grove High School—Go Saints! Within the following year, I enrolled at The Los Angeles Film School to pursue my bachelor’s degree in Digital Film. That was the moment I got honest with myself: I didn’t want to just “figure something out.” I wanted to intentionally build a career in the film industry and ultimately become a director.
In 2021, I took my first real step as an entrepreneur starting my first business, DIIVIINE VISUALS PRODUCTIONS. At the time, I was doing gigs—really just getting my feet wet, learning what I liked, building my skills, and figuring out how I wanted to show up in the industry.
Then in 2022, I was granted the opportunity to join Streetlights, a minority career-ready program based in California that launched its first bi-costal program to collaborate with the aspiring talent in Atlanta. That experience was a turning point for me because it didn’t just inspire me—it prepared me. It gave me hands-on training, a stronger understanding of how the film industry works, and the confidence to take myself seriously as both a creative and a founder.
Since then, I’ve quietly continued building—expanding my experience, refining my creative skills & vision.
Fast forwarding to 2026, I completely rebranded, officially evolving Diiviine Visuals Productions into DIIVIINE STUDIOS, a creative agency where I now serve as Founder & Creative Director. I specialize in but not limited to producing premium visual campaigns for brands.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. While I was enrolled in school, COVID was in full swing, creating global fear. At the same time, I was facing several personal challenges, which forced me to make a difficult choice. Unfortunately, I ended up dropping out, but I continued working in the industry and building real-world experience.
Later, when the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes occurred in 2023, work slowed down significantly, and I began to feel the instability that can come with contract- or gig-based work. To stay financially secure, I leaned into my secondary career in healthcare. That choice helped keep me grounded, but I also felt stuck—like a piece of me was missing—until 2025.
The upside is that the experience taught me resilience, and I’m now moving forward with greater clarity and intention in 2026, navigating my way back to what I love: being a creative.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
DIIVIINE STUDIOS is a creative agency where brands come to turn ideas into cinematic grade visuals.
My work centers development and execution: I specialize in building campaign ideation (being a creative director), brand commercials, short-form ads, product storytelling (like UGC), and campaign visuals—designed to be used across social media, paid ads, product launches and etc.
What sets Diiviine Studios apart is my workflow. I’ve integrated AI into the rendering process to streamline production without sacrificing quality and time. That means faster turnarounds, consistent output, and the ability to explore multiple creative directions efficiently—while keeping storytelling at the core of every campaign… human-led creative direction and brand strategy.
The result is cinematic, high-impact content that looks premium, aligns with business goals, and helps brands stand out in a crowded market.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
“I wish I understood earlier on that consistency can sometimes beat talent. I want people to always consider, when it comes to building a career—keep creating, keep showcasing, and build systems that protect your stability.”
5 THINGS TO TAKE AWAY
1. Build stability on purpose, not by accident.
Creative work especially contract work—can be unpredictable. Set up a financial buffer, a simple budget, and a consistent client pipeline so you’re not forced to make survival decisions when the industry slows down.
2. Your portfolio matters more than your résumé.
Don’t wait for permission or a “big break.” Create spec campaigns, mock ads, and real-world examples that show your taste, your process, and your range. One strong body of work opens more doors than a long list of titles.
3. Treat yourself like a business from day one.
Get clear on what you offer, what you charge, and how you deliver. Use contracts, collect deposits, set boundaries, and don’t undervalue strategy and direction—clients pay for clarity and outcomes.
4. Don’t chase tools—master fundamentals.
Whether you use AI or traditional methods, what wins is storytelling, composition, lighting, pacing, and brand consistency. Remember tools can change but having the fundamentals means you can compound.
5. Stay connected and visible even when you’re not “booked.”
Relationships and consistency create momentum. Post your work, document your process, and keep conversations going with collaborators and brands— a lot of opportunities come from proximity and timing. SHOW UP EVERYDAY & ALWAYS REMAIN ADAPTABLE.
