Meet Michelle Bell of Costa Mesa, CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Bell.

Hi Michelle , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing freelance makeup in 2013. I’ve also worked for companies like Bare Minerals, MAC, Sephora, and Beauty Barrage. But I always liked working for myself best. I moved back to California (I am a native) from Texas in June 2020, and have worked mostly in Real Estate, but that isn’t where my passion lies. This year, I’ve committed to rebuilding my freelance business. I’m focusing on leveraging social media—specifically Instagram and TikTok—to increase visibility for Beauty by M Bell. I’m also working with business coach Lina Zuniga, who specializes in helping makeup artists grow their businesses through Instagram. My following is growing, and I was recently recognized by e.l.f. Cosmetics after tagging them in an Instagram post.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Over the years, I’ve faced several challenges, including slow months when my income wasn’t enough to cover rent and other expenses, strong competition from other artists in the area, and periods of depression that made it difficult to work consistently. It hasn’t always been a smooth journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I know how to do all kinds of makeup, but I recently decided to focus on corporate headshots and soft glam desk-to-dinner looks. What sets me apart from others is my clear understanding of color theory and skin undertones. I do not use pre-made foundations. I use a Graftobian HD Creme Foundation Palette to create customized shades for my clients. I’m most proud of taking the initiative to restart my business in a new city and state, and my previously published feature in Voyage Dallas.
