Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakia Burrise.
Hi Nakia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in Stockton, CA, I was introduced to musical theater and performance in elementary school. I involved myself in every and anything possible. I began performing acrobatics by the age of five and later ventured into theater, musical theater, dancing, singing, and modeling. During my senior year of high school, I auditioned for UCLA’s prestigious theater department and was the only African American female freshman accepted into program that year. I was truly excited to be in Los Angeles and attending the school of my dreams. By the time I was a junior at UCLA, my professional career had begun. I booked my first series regular role on Power Rangers, as Tanya Sloan, the Yellow Power Ranger; while simultaneously recording my first pop album with my singing group, Divine. I have since had the opportunity to portray an array of characters in various series and movies – Sydney to the Max, Atypical, Hart of Dixie (recurring), Jane the Virgin, Baby Daddy, Barbie’s Life in the Dreamhouse (voice), The Mindy Project, Rebel, Murder in the First, Angie Tribeca, Star Trek Continue and so much more. I’ve also been blessed to be a part of several animated series, web series, films and commercials.
In 2012, I launched Sovereignty Entertainment Inc. a production company dedicated to producing family-friendly television, web series, and films. Sovereignty produced its first web series in 2015, Class Dismissed. I was the series creator, executive producer, and writer on the project, with two successful seasons.
In 2019, after years of being a guest at comic conventions, I decided to start my own. I partnered with Karan Ashley and Micheal Buoni to launch our comic convention Rangerstop & Pop Convention is Atlanta, GA. With two successful years of vendors, artists, cosplayers and celebrity guests- ranging from Power Rangers, anime to Pop Culture, we are now venturing into our 3rd year at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel June 10-12th.
In 2020, Catherine Sutherland and I launched our Youtube Channel, Power Rangers Playback. The channel’s content explores the nostalgia of Power Rangers through episode playback, commentary, gameshow trivia, Live stream interviews, comedy skits and much more. In just one year, Power Rangers Playback has over 100 paid members and has introduced a new element to our company, Superchat Podcast.
But more than anything, it is more important to be a blessing to others. From 2009-2013, my non-profit, A Day in the Life, introduced inner city children to career and life opportunities that were not readily accessible in their community throughout workshops, activities, and field trips. Additionally, I continue to pour back into my community by leading women’s groups (over ten years) and assisting nonprofit organizations both physically and monetarily.
If blessings can flow through you (to others) then blessings will come to you. “Everything is possible for him who believes..” Mark 9:23
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing is ever a smooth road. If it were, I believe, one wouldn’t appreciate their struggle to triumph.
I have had some extremely great years in the industry followed by tumultuous ones. In 2007, I was diagnosed with a lung disease, Sarcoidosis. I was immediately placed on several different medications to fight the inflammation in my lungs and throughout my body. During that time, I removed myself from the entertainment industry. I didn’t look or feel like myself anymore. I struggled to find my joy and happiness. I felt as though my dreams had been taken away from me. I was truly uncertain about my future. After a year of intense medication and prayer, I went into remission. I was not only grateful for a clean bill of health but also for the opportunity to be creative again – through acting and producing.
I still have unfulfilled dreams that I strive for daily. But, I believe with the help of my Lord Jesus ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! If the opportunity is meant for me…no one can take it away. I just have to walk in and take it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a producer, writer, actress, and business owner. I am resilient, determined, and motivated to knock down doors and open up opportunities for others. I strive not to only be successful in my line of work…but also to bring others along for the ride.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I love to beatbox. Yes, that’s right…lol I grew up in the 80-90’s beatboxing, pop-locking, and b-boying was my thing.
