Today, we’d like to introduce you to Patrice Chappelle.
Hi Patrice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
MelanBrand Skin, LLC was founded by me and my then 12-year-old son in May 2023. Over the years, when Bron was much younger, I struggled to find suitable skincare products for his skin. There were no skincare products for children, especially Black and brown kids in stores like Target, Walmart, or Walgreens.
His skin always looked dry, and he was using products that were made for adults or water, soap, and lotion. I was tired of this, so I began researching tirelessly. In April of 2023, I was unexpectedly laid off from my federal contracting position.
At that time, I was like, it’s go time. In January of 2023, Bron turned 12, and instead of a birthday party, I gave him $1200 towards starting his new business. Of course, the investment was much more than that to get MelanBrand Skin off the ground, but it was just the concept that I was creating generational wealth for him. He may not have understood that then, or even now, but by doing this, we are making Black History.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road simply because we are still building. Also it’s just me and Bron, just the two of us in the business and he is watching and learning.
The biggest issue is funding; since we are bootstrapping everything right now, that gets tough. We hope that this year is the year that we can access capital and funding in a variety of ways such as grants, accelerators, investors, and more.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is being alive and well. There are so many things that I am grateful for, and Bron and I are healthy and since we are, we can get to wealth. I am also excited and happy that Bron and I are building a business that will one day make us millionaires and a legacy that I can leave behind.
