Meet Ria Sahara of Gentle Dentistry of Newnan PC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ria Sahara.

Hi Ria, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hello I’m Dr. Ria Sahara. I grew up in Holland, Michigan, a small town with very little diversity This small town experience taught me early on how to navigate spaces where I stood out. As the oldest of four children, with a nine-year age gap between me and my youngest sibling, I naturally stepped into a leadership role within my family. This upbringing shaped my sense of responsibility, empathy, and care for others.

In school, I embraced my love for both science and the arts. I proudly identified as a nerd; curious, creative, and driven. Originally, I wanted to become an obstetrician-gynecologist. Yet in high school, I had the unforgettable opportunity to be in the delivery room when my baby brother was born. While the experience was powerful, I realized that particular path wasn’t for me. It wasn’t until college that I discovered dentistry as a true calling. Through a family friend who was a dentist, I had the chance to shadow and see the profession up close. I quickly realized that dentistry perfectly combined everything I loved—science, artistry, and the ability to connect with people in a meaningful way.

Today, I’m the owner and sole clinician at Gentle Dentistry of Newnan, PC, where I’m committed to providing high-quality, compassionate dental care in a calm, welcoming environment. For me, dentistry is more than treating teeth; it’s about helping people feel confident, understood, and empowered through their smiles.

Outside the practice, I’m passionate about community involvement and mentorship. I volunteer at the Ben Massell Dental Clinic in Atlanta. I’m also a member of the Georgia Dental Association, American Dental Association, North Georgia Dental Society, and Top Ladies of Distinction (Atlanta Peachtree Chapter), where I mentor young women and support leadership development.

I believe success is measured by impact. The greatest reward in my work is knowing I’ve made a difference; whether by restoring someone’s smile or helping them feel more confident in who they are.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all, but every challenge has shaped me into the dentist and business owner I am today.

Dental school was one of the most intense periods of my life. The academic workload was demanding, the expectations were high, and balancing clinical skills with classroom performance was no small feat. There were moments when I questioned if I was cut out for it. What kept me going was my “why” knowing that this career would allow me to truly make a difference in people’s lives. I stayed focused, leaned on my support system, and kept pushing forward.

Owning my own practice came with a whole new set of challenges. It’s one thing to be a great clinician, it’s another to become a CEO overnight. I had to learn how to run a business, manage a team, make smart financial decisions, and build something sustainable from the ground up. Working with a tight budget meant I had to be strategic about where every dollar went. Equipment, rent, and marketing these things adds up quickly. To stay focused I reminded myself that every big dream requires sacrifice and planning.

One of the hardest parts, but also one of the most rewarding was finding the right team. It took time, trial and error, and a lot of faith. I wasn’t just hiring people to fill roles, I was building a culture, a patient experience, a reflection of the values I believe in. Now, I’m proud to say I have a team that cares deeply, works hard, and shows up for our patients with kindness and excellence.

So no, the road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s been worth every bump.

How do you think about luck?
Luck—both good and bad—has definitely played a role in my journey. Yet, I believe it’s what you do with those moments that truly shapes your path. I’ve had unexpected opportunities come my way, like meeting mentors or crossing paths with people who helped open doors in dentistry. That kind of good luck is real, and I’m grateful for it.

I’ve also faced challenges, moments that didn’t feel lucky at all at the time. Looking back, those setbacks pushed me to grow, to pivot, and to build resilience. In many ways, the “bad luck” helped shape the clarity and purpose I now bring to my practice.

Ultimately, I believe that preparation, faith, and persistence allow you to take advantage of the luck that does come your way. And when things don’t go as planned, you can still turn those moments into something meaningful. That mindset has been a guiding force in both my life and my business.
