Meet Roshawn Middleton of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshawn Middleton.

Hi Roshawn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started being a hairstylist working in my cousin’s salon as an assistant. Then I went to school at Dudley’s Hair Institute in North Carolina. I went back to Ct to work full time as a hairstylist in the same salon. Then 10years later I opened my own salon. Salon Roshawn. I had a assortment of clients. Basketball wives, business women and neighborhood clients. I started doing Gayle King through a basketball wife. I did her hair for about 20years. Gayle surprised me with a feature on the Oprah Winfrey show where my career really took off. Through this relationship I met Tyler Perry and we became friends. So ready to get from behind the salon chair I asked him if I could come to Atlanta to work for him at his new giant studio. He said yes and the rest is history.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I was in hair school I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I stayed at school as long as possible.I had my daughter and with my mother’s help and love I went right back and finished..

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a licensed cosmetologist from a time when we were experimenting with creating new and innovative hairstyles.. I am most proud of having my own successful business for 25 years. I loved my clients and most importantly raising my two kids while doing so.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My most important quality is my ability to my make people feel better than they did before getting their hair done. I am a leader but I care about who I’m leading I am a giver so I feel you have to be grateful for what you have and give to others when you can.
