Today we’d like to introduce you to Rynette Upson-Bush.
Rynette, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was in the public school system for 17 years… teacher and administrator. I was also an adjunct professor for six years. Though I loved my career in the education arena, I knew I was supposed to be my own boss.
In 2012 I took a leap of faith and left the school system to start a school with my sister. The first order of business was to find a building. Well in the process of looking for a building six buildings fell through and it wasn’t until the 7th building that we secured a place for our school. From there, we took off. We opened in October 2013 and by March 2014, we were full. Our first year open we became the Orlando Magic Preschool of the year! We were chosen as a model preschool by the Early Learning Coalition. We became accredited nationally and internationally. The accolades continued and within a year and a half of opening, we were a million-dollar business!
The second-year we opened an Academy for K-5 students and a consulting firm helping with school start-ups and through my experience with the buildings, I was asked to share my story at an entrepreneurial event and fell in love with speaking and educating women. I found myself getting booked more and more. I ended up starting my own speaking business and online business, Next Level Chicks, to help women walk in their purpose and passion. I did this part-time for almost three years. At the end of the year last school year, I took another leap of faith and walked away from the school to pursue my speaking and coaching business full time.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, the road was not smooth. Nothing worth having ever comes easy. Six buildings falling through was a huge obstacle. Ran into several hurdles once we got the building with the county and people anonymously calling code enforcement to delay our opening. Finding and retaining employees who were the right fit. Different management styles. There were several issues along the way but it’s all a part of entrepreneurship. Definitely, something that you must be willing to work through and to grow and improve.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I help part-time entrepreneurs level up their mindset, make more money, fire their boss, and create a life they love. We provide personal development courses to prepare you for your next level. Basically, train your brain to see the possibilities and go after them. Next Level is known for pushing people on purpose to walk in their purpose and go after their dreams. Anything is possible when you learn to believe and take action.
What were you like growing up?
I did not have a lot of self-confidence at all. I was very scared to try things because I didn’t want to fail. I was negative didn’t believe in me or my dreams. I was a cheerleader and played volleyball… was reluctant to try out but it worked to my surprise. Didn’t have a lot of friends. I was taught early on not to trust people. Had my share of Girl drama. I was pretty sheltered. My mom was strict. I got out some but not much. I came from a middle-class family. We traveled quite often and education was instilled in us. We were taught education is the key.
