Meet Solomon Maye of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Solomon Maye.

Hi Solomon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Solomon Maye “Coach Solo” I from New Haven all my life. Boxing has been like a parent to me. I was put out of my household at the age of 13. As you can imagine growing up was hard for me. Between being homeless, and going back and forth to juvenile detention and prison boxing was my only outlet it tough me basic physical, mental and emotional health. How to be focused, and discipline.
I became a pro boxer at the age of 38, I wasn’t that good because I didn’t have the proper training so my goal is to be that person that I needed growing up to the youth that are going through some of the things I suffered. In short I am the head trainer and owner of a youth boxing program that nationally know as one of the best amateur boxing programs in the nation.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not smooth at all, I’ve never had a job and this is my first business that I own. It very difficult navigating through a world that I am not familiar with or been schooled on. I struggle with administration duties for my business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a registered USA amateur boxing coach. I own a youth boxing gym that serves at risk youth in a low income community. I am known for the time and patience I have training and mentoring youth. What sets me apart is that not only am I doing the work I lived through what a lot of the at risk youth are going through, I can relate to their circumstances.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Not many but if I had to say it was being in juvenile and prison. I say that because every good thing that happened to me I was in trouble. In prison I learned how to communicate, read (got my GED) and just learned who I was in those time.
