Rising Stars: Meet Antonette Tucker of Inman Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Antonette Tucker

Hi Antonette, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Well, I’m from Birmingham, Alabama. I have done hair since I was 10 years old. Being that I came from a poor home, my sisters and I couldnt afford to have a beautician in our weekly routine. We were made fun of because of it. I became fed up with the mistreatment. I began to teach myself how to do my sister’s and I hair. Once I got to high school, I became known as the school braider. I would braid hair any and everywhere. The library, park, restaurants, school sports activities. Any where. Lol!
I moved to Atlanta, GA in 2003. I came to pursue my dreams of becoming a Master Cosmetologist. I attended Paul Mitchell School of Atlanta. That is where my career in TV/ Film hairstylist began. I worked as an intern on my first major picture (Hunger Games:Catching Fire) while enrolled.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like all journeys , I have had my obstacles and struggles. Being a new mom starting her career, it was hard to balance work and home. Fortunately, I had family and friends who believed in me and my dreams of becoming a TV/Film hairstylist.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Being a hairstylist in the tv/Film industry, I have to many tools of knowledge in my tool box. From wig installation, stunt wigs installation, color, cuts, an eye for screen hair, and most importantly styling. Being able to work with all hair types, that includes different types of weaves and extensions. Granted, every one has these tools of knowledge, but I am a stickler for details. When it comes to hair, I am a quick thinker, and problem solver. I feel like I’m a savant for hair. Lol

I’m proud of all the work I have done on set. I cant just pick 1, 2, or 3. They are like my children, I’m proud them all in there on special ways. Lol!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice on finding a mentor, find some one who loves your industry, and wants to pass along the knowledge the have acquired over their career.

Remember someone is always watching you work and what you produce. With that being said, let your work speak for you, but be open to constructive criticism.
