Today we’d like to introduce you to David Duncan.
Hi David, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2016, a couple of weeks before my middle child was born, I was offered a position to come and teach in a primary school here in Atlanta. After much consideration, my wife and I decided we would leave our jobs, family and New York City living and come serve some of Atlanta’s inner-city youth. After serving children directly in kindergarten through Second grade along with their families, I was let go after completion of my third year.
As my family continued to grow, I knew that I needed to secure a new job quickly. I earned the opportunity to work with the Department of Sanitation. It was my experience collecting trash bins and observing customer reactions to how the cans were left after being emptied that inspired me to look into a solution. After much research, coupled with intentional and impromptu surveying of friends, family and the homeowners on our trash route, MisterBins was birthed.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There were definitely challenges along the way and still are. There was a change in careers, so coming up with financing to purchase the actual trailer was something we had to cover one. Deciding to outsource for the creation of the website or working on it ourselves. Finding the time to market the business while working full time. And overall trying to figure out how to balance it all while still being present for my wife and young children.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a family-owned and operated eco-friendly, cost-effective trash can and bin cleaning company that helps home and business owners get rid of dirt, dangerous bacteria and germs in your trash and recycle bins. Helping to keep your family, customers and community members protected from insects, pests, odors and bacteria, is what is most important to us.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My wife for believing in me and my ideas. She had supported me and our business in every way, even when I didn’t know what we needed to make this a success. All of my family and friends who prayed for, encouraged, supported and pushed me. Those who listened to me talk “trash” all day (pun intended)!
And lastly, all those who gave me “no’s, not at this time” or “we’re going in a different direction.” The drive to take care of my family, create something that benefits the community and have something that my children can one day completely takeover came from the setbacks.
