Rising Stars: Meet Don Wilson of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Don Wilson.

Hi Don, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
RunStrongDon started from a simple reality: you didn’t see yourself as a runner.

You were a gym-focused athlete who could run, but in 2017 I started running consistently on your own and discovered that endurance changed more than your fitness. It changed your mindset, discipline, and confidence. What began as personal growth evolved into a mission to help beginners, returning runners, and people who never thought running was for them build strength through movement.

Heart on Fire Training was created as the coaching arm of that mission.

The idea was never just to help people run farther. It was to help them become stronger, healthier, and more resilient through a combination of running, strength training, mobility, and accountability. The name reflects the belief that lasting transformation starts with purpose and passion first, then disciplined action.

Together, RunStrongDon and Heart on Fire Training represent a movement built on one message:

You don’t have to look like a runner to become one. You just have to start.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Heart on Fire Training didn’t start as a run club or a social media brand. It started inside a boutique gym with a vision that was bigger than the space.

The original goal was to help everyday people lose weight, build confidence, and improve their health through a combination of strength training and cardiovascular fitness. Early on, the focus was group training, personal coaching, and creating an environment where people felt supported regardless of where they were starting.

As the journey progressed, reality provided valuable lessons. Building a fitness business from the ground up required more than coaching ability. It required marketing, sales, retention, community building, and consistency. Some ideas worked. Others didn’t gain traction the way they were expected to. The boutique gym model proved challenging to scale and sustain.

At the same time, running was becoming a larger part of your identity. What started as solo miles evolved into races, personal records, a sub-1:30 half marathon, a 3:22 marathon, and thousands of miles of experience. More importantly, running connected you with people in a way traditional gym training never had.

That shift led to the evolution of the brand.

Heart on Fire Training expanded from a gym-centered coaching business into a movement focused on helping people build endurance, confidence, and strength through running and fitness. RunStrongDon became the public face of that mission, sharing the journey openly and showing that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things with consistent effort.

Today, the work extends far beyond personal training. It includes run clubs, community events, race partnerships, coaching, content creation, mentorship, and nonprofit work through Run Well Georgia. The mission remains the same as it was on day one: help people become stronger physically and mentally. The difference is the reach.

What began with a small group in a boutique gym has grown into a community-driven movement impacting runners and aspiring runners across Gwinnett County and beyond. The vision is no longer just about training sessions. It’s about creating opportunities for people to discover what’s possible when they commit to the journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a husband, father, corporate analyst, coach, and community builder who believes high performance isn’t reserved for professional athletes. It’s built in the margins of everyday life.

By day, I work as a CRM Analyst in the corporate world, solving complex problems and helping drive business outcomes. Outside of work, I lead Heart on Fire Training and RunStrongDon, where I help people build strength, endurance, and confidence through running and fitness.

What makes my perspective unique is that I’m living the same reality as many of the people I serve. I’m balancing a career, marriage, fatherhood, community leadership, training, and personal goals while pursuing excellence in each area. I understand what it takes to train before work, show up for family, lead others, and stay committed when life gets busy.

Through Heart on Fire Training, I coach individuals to become stronger physically and mentally through a combination of running, strength training, and accountability. Through RunStrongDon, I share education, motivation, and real-world experiences to help beginners and everyday athletes realize they are capable of more than they think.

I’m also proud to help lead community initiatives including run clubs, races, and nonprofit wellness programs that create opportunities for people from all backgrounds to discover running and fitness in an inclusive and supportive environment.

What sets me apart is that I don’t teach from theory. I teach from experience. Every lesson comes from balancing the same responsibilities my audience faces while pursuing ambitious goals. My mission is simple: show people that you don’t have to choose between career, family, health, and big goals. With purpose and consistency, you can build all of them together.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Freedom of expression without guilt. The 90s and early 2000s. All day long bike rides and just the overall yuppie behaviors of yester-years.
