Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Sears Motley.
Hi Justin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve played football basically all my life; I played at the collegiate level and just knew I’d be a professional football player. While attending Western Michigan, I took two classes that introduced me to acting; Intro to Theater and African American Theater. Upon graduation, I accepted a position in education in an alternative school setting and was even named Head Varsity Basketball coach; but I longed to do something more fulfilling. I asked myself a question one day, and that question was “if I had all the money in the world, what would I want to wake up and do everyday?” and my answer was “To be on TV.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The process has not been smooth at all; this road has had many bumps and setbacks along the way. I have made many mistakes that I am blessed to be able to have learned from. When I first starting out, I submitted for hundreds of roles before being chosen as an extra and hundreds more before I clinched a speaking role! The industry is tough and competitive and I believe that one of the first things that you need to be successful in this industry is a strong mental capacity. You have to be very comfortable with denial and being told “no.” I was told “No” Hundreds of times before I was told “Yes!” The way I see it, If never give up, I will be able to achieve my dreams in the film industry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an Actor that specializes in TV and Film. I am known for coming to the set early and being prepared. I am proud of accomplishing my initial goals that I set out for myself in the industry and to learn from people that I have been able to connect with along the way. For the things I’ve yet to accomplish, I enjoy the process of striving towards those goals more than anything.
A few things that set me apart from other actors is my ability focus and my intense work ethic! There were many sacrifices that I had to make in order for me to move to Atlanta, Ga and start acting; I know those sacrifices will pay off in the end.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t believe in luck; I keep God first in my life and let Him guide me. I believe that you get out whatever it is that you put in.
