Rising Stars: Meet Laneceon Weems of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laneceon Weems.

Hi Laneceon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started off writing as a little girl. Whenever I received a journal as gift I would use it to express things that I normally wouldn’t be allowed to if I spoke it. It went from journal entries to poems to music. From there I discovered that I truly have a gift to be proud of. I love the feeling of freedom when I’m writing, it gives me a sense of relief. Growing up, I never felt like my emotions, my needs, my voice mattered but seeing my emotions on paper brought me to a sense of validation and helped me identify my emotions. It’s inspired so much that my first tattoo at 17 years old was “ my voice matters “ on my forearm.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve experienced a lot of hardships in my life trying navigate in this world as a young girl. As a young lesbian, I’ve experienced bullying and harsh words because of who I choose to love. I’ve dealt with a lot family trauma but I try not to make that my identity. I want to really be able to dive into my dream work and see the benefit. I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am today and sometimes I still feel imposter syndrome to point where I don’t want to post content because I feel like what’s the point ? It’s so many people trying to become a star, what makes me so different? But the question will always be why stop in hell if the intention is paradise?

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Although I don’t make my living do this, I’m a poet and an artist born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. I’ve been posting music content since I was a kid and I’m now starting to get in the rhythm of posting again. I can write to any subject, any beat and come out with some heat. I appreciate my ability to truly put my thoughts together and create something meaningful with my words. I love that I can talk about real things and pleasure. Sometimes when I’m in dark wave and in doubt, I’m proud to say I have people around me to remind myself of gift.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe that taking risks is necessary to break the cycle of procrastination. I still find myself going through this stage of fear to where I don’t want to put myself out there, but it’s stopping me from achieving my goals and I feel even worse once the day is done. I encourage all the people to at least try to fulfill your dreams because you cancel them out.
