Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Hopper.
Hi Richard, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Richard Hopper burst onto London, Ontario’s open-stage scene on July 6, 2025, and has since become one of the city’s most magnetic drag kings. Since that first performance, he has become my theatrical drag king persona—a gentleman with a bit of edge, known for expressive, heart-on-his-sleeve performances. Every time Richard steps onto the stage, his goal is simple: to sweep audiences off their feet through passionate storytelling, playful charm, and joyful, rhythmic prancing. I transform Richard’s look, character, and aesthetic to suit the theme of each piece, That shape-shifting comes from a lifetime of chasing performance art that taught me how to listen, move, and play. Drag, though, unlocked something else: an endless playground for growth and self-expression, costumes, Makeup, movement, comedy, and heart all at once. It’s the kind of work that never stops teaching me and never fails to thrill. My art reflects a passion that has been with me since I was a kid who loved the spotlight. I’ve always loved performing and entertaining people, and that love has shaped who I am. Over the years, I explored stage acting, improv, and dance, constantly searching for the creative outlet that truly felt like home. When I discovered drag, everything clicked. None of what I’ve accomplished would have been possible without my community. The friends, mentors, and audiences who cheered, encouraged, and carried me forward. Because of them, I’ve had the opportunity to perform in sold-out shows, participate in fundraisers, compete in—and even win competitions—and continue growing as both an artist and a performer. That community keeps me grounded, and the stage keeps me hungry. As long as there’s a song to sing and a story to tell, Richard Hopper will keep dancing his way into people’s hearts.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey so far has been increasingly successful, but it’s the behind-the-scenes struggles that have been the most challenging. While I have always felt confident as a performer once I’m on stage, the biggest battles I face happen in my own mind. Mental health has often affected my confidence, particularly when it comes to using my own voice. I’ve never been a naturally assertive person, and for a long time I doubted my ability to speak up or take charge. One of my greatest challenges was finding the confidence to host shows, as the idea of speaking directly to an audience felt far more intimidating than performing. Through developing my drag persona, Richard, I’ve gradually learned to overcome those fears. Richard has given me the confidence to stand up for myself, advocate for others, and speak with conviction. What began as a character has become a way of building confidence in myself. Although my mental health continues to be something I work on, drag has become much more than a performance. It has helped me grow into a more confident person, proving that the strength I show on stage can also exist in my everyday life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a drag king, I specialize in theatrical performances that combine lip-syncing, dance, costuming, and makeup to create entertaining and engaging shows. I am best known for my high-energy performances, which are driven by passion, charisma, and a strong connection with the audience. My performance style is inspired primarily by pop-punk music and romantic themes, although I enjoy exploring other genres and styles when the opportunity arises. I have built a reputation for my commitment to every performance, always giving my full energy on stage, while also being known as a gentleman and a supportive member of the drag community off stage. One of my proudest accomplishments was winning the Rec Room Rumble, an eight-person drag competition in London, Ontario. This achievement reflected the hard work, creativity, and dedication I have put into developing my craft. What sets me apart from others is my combination of theatrical storytelling, energetic stage presence, and genuine character. I strive to create performances that are not only entertaining but memorable, while maintaining authenticity, professionalism, and respect for both my audience and fellow performers.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always open to collaborating on a wide variety of shows and events, and I enjoy working with different venues and event spaces to create memorable performances. Whether it’s a drag show, community event, fundraiser, private event, themed performance, music video or anything else, I’m always excited to explore new opportunities. If you’d like to support my work, the best way is to book me for an event by emailing richardhopperdrag@gmail.com or follow me on Instagram to keep up with my upcoming performances and come along to a show. Drag is a tipping industry, so tips are always greatly appreciated—they directly support the artists and the work that goes into every performance. That said, enthusiastic applause and audience energy are just as meaningful and help make every show unforgettable.
