Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabine Barlatt.
Hi Sabine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Sabine Barlatt. As the proud mother to my children Noah and Noelle, along with being happily married for over ten years I have learned that every day is an opportunity for all of us step into our better selves. I was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti and raised in New York City. Growing up, I have always wanted to serve others by becoming a physician. I am a proud Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and a Board-Certified Family Physician. I am currently the Medical Director at Ascend Medical which is an innovative telehealth primary care practice that combines technology with thoughtful, personalized care to provide a health destination that fits the patient’s schedule. What attracted me to this cutting-edge field of medicine was an opportunity to help cultivate the changing landscape of healthcare to better serve a wider community through technology. Community service and outreach, the act of giving back when God has truly blessed me, is especially important to me. I belong to a women’s volunteer service organization and dedicate at least 48 hours of community service yearly through my organization.
Prior to moving to Georgia three years ago, I was then a Medical Director of a robust urgent care while living in Youngstown, Ohio area. We treated a wide range of patients from all backgrounds and even on my busiest day-I learned the importance of taking the time to talk with each person and letting my preconceived assumptions be replaced with empathy. In all that I have accomplished, I hold to great esteem the importance of giving back through teaching. During my time as family medicine residency faculty at one of Georgia’s leading hospitals-I had great experiences in sharing my story with newly trained physicians and medical students. As a physician, I still follow the belief to “see one, do one, teach one”.
As I now step into my better self, my children and family have taken a greater role in my growth. During the recent COVID pandemic, like many Americans, I also had time to reflect upon what truly matters. I found that there is more to all of us in addition to our careers. So, I become a newly self-published author to tell not my story but my daughter’s story. I wrote a book called “Noelle Finds Her Voice” to honor my daughter Noelle and children like her with speech and language delays. I wrote this book to be a source of inspiration and to empower parents and children going through a similar situation. It is my hope for my better self is to serve as an example for all women in showing them that you can be all and do all when you give your all.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There is no single greater challenge that I have faced than trying to be a working mom while keeping it all together and smiling that everything is fine. I used to think that though the road may not be smooth-if I just keep on pushing, then there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. So, I pushed and pushed. I worked as a busy mom while being pregnant right up until two weeks before delivery and even through post-partum blues. I pushed to have dinner ready, feed the kids, attend every meeting, and wake up the next morning only to repeat the same cycle.
I kept on waiting for my light at the end of the tunnel. I pushed until I could not push anymore, and I asked God why am I so tired? It was then that I stopped searching for the light at the end of the tunnel and found that the light was in me all along. I stopped pushing and started pulling myself closer to God and my light became a spark and my spark become my fire. There were times when my faith was shaken and lost hope. There were times when I was knocked down, but I had to look up and get back up. Albert Einstein said something about failure “If you haven’t failed yet, you haven’t tried anything new.” I feel like these bumps. These challenges and sometimes failures have molded me into the person I am today and allowed me to achieve my goals.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As the Medical Director of Ascend Medical, it has been really exciting to help lead the way on this new journey in healthcare. At Ascend Medical, our patients enjoy the flexibility and convenience of medical care when and where they need it. We offer 24/7 remote telehealth visits to address all primary care needs. We are a telehealth Family Medicine practice. We offer Mobile care that comes to the patient’s home. We also offer Pediatrics and Behavioral Health. As an Ascend Medical member, patients have access to same-day appointments with a provider from their care team who knows their health journey. That means 24/7 telehealth visits, same-day appointments and unlimited in-person visits to your home, work or anywhere around town. We take care of all your primary care needs.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of being a mom to my two amazing children, Noah and Noelle. I am proud to be a full-time working physician mom. I am also proud to be a first-time self-published author. I recently published a children’s book called “Noelle Finds Her Voice” to honor my daughter and children like her with speech and language delay. I am proud to be the daughter of two Haitian immigrants.
What sets you apart from others?
I am able to deeply connect with folks from all walks of life. I am always amazed by the experiences I gain from my interactions with others. A simple smile and hello have opened me to the true beauty and uniqueness of humanity.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is being able to look yourself in the mirror knowing that you have conquered your fears, accomplished your impossible, reaching your personal goals, staying true to your beliefs and principles while being your best. Ms. Oprah Winfrey said it best. “I’ve come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that’s as unique as a fingerprint – and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you.”
